Gold Coast Open House returns this weekend, Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October.

From Ceramic House, a 1919 Queenslander in Nerang, to Hinze Dam turning 50 and contemporary architect-designed homes, this year’s program covers more than a century of Gold Coast architecture.

Go behind the scenes at some of the city’s most significant buildings, and share what you find in our Storylines photography competition.

Many buildings are open to drop in, including Ceramic House and Preece House, Sata Nita and the Rotary Broadwater Chapel by the Sea. Some tours require booking.

See the full program at goldcoastopenhouse.com.au

TWELVE PROJECTS (1998-2018) investigating Enclosure, Aperture, Structure, and Ground. These drawings depict four simple domains of experimentation - intertwined in practice - but distilled for analysis. This progression moves left to right chronologically, but more significantly, traces an evolution of design from layered and heterogeneous, to composite and integrated. 7 of these 12 projects were realized as built dwellings or experimental pavilions, but all of them have materiality and assembly as one of the key drivers in the service of spatial experience. #architecture #construction #building_plusorminus #axonometry #distillation

ASA FUTURES STUDIO: THE END GAME–DENSITY

Thanks Assistant Professor Mark Bagguley for inviting me to join your Design Futures Studio critique at Abedian School of Architecture, Bond University: DENSITY IN THE CITY.

“DFS challenges each student group to explore a transformative urban design response for a proposed Olympic Satellite Village at Broadbeach South, GC as part of the future thinking for the build-up to the 2032 Olympics. Design responses should develop urban connectivity, with emphasis establishing walkable ‘GREEN’ routes to nearby Olympic events.”

The day reminded me of the GREEN Pathways, Gold Places award-winning urban design and planning advocacy initiative for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic & Paralympic Games, a group of design professionals united in advocating for a meaningful and connected games legacy.

As President of AIA QLD 2024, I enjoyed the positive reception of governments, industry, and community. Media collateral in our bio includes an interview with USA 2023 Gold Medal Architect, Carol Ross Barney, speaking on a Chicago project that aligns perfectly with the studio theme: Riverwalk.

Pacific Fair faces a GREEN pathway and presents a golden opportunity for architects, planners, landscape architects, and designers to boldly curate an exemplar transition from infrastructure to entertainment, river to Ravinia.

RIVER is the link.

It’s the GREEN pathway, the water body that links the Gold Coast, Brisbane, and Chicago, and the reason Carol visited the ASA in 2024 after key-noting the Future Shock: Designing City Resilience symposium hosted by AIA QLD with BondorMetecno.

And what a role model for architects Carol is, with Chicago naming a day in her honour!

“This September 14, we celebrate Carol Ross Barney and the city she has spent a lifetime making more beautiful, accessible, resilient, and public. In 2023, Carol became the first living woman to receive the AIA Gold Medal as an individual and only the sixth Chicago architect, and the first in 60 years, to receive architecture’s highest AIA honor.”

It was great being at ASA, reminiscing about my tutoring days, and celebrating my good fortune of including it and Carol in my own legacy.

@paulinpaulinpaulin partnered with the London store @voyeurvoyeur____________ to create a limited-edition finish for the Tongue Chair, establishing a direct dialogue between the piece and the store’s architectural setting.
