🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Happy St Andrew’s Day / Là Naomh Anndrais 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

So grateful to take the kids “home” last year to visit the auld country.

Already planning the next trip - well my least in my head.

If you haven’t visited Scotland, I’d highly recommend going!

“Edina! Scotia’s darling seat!
All hail thy palaces and tow’rs,
Where once, beneath a Monarch’s feet,
Sat Legislation’s sov’reign pow’rs :
From marking wildly-scatt’red flow’rs,
As on the banks of Ayr I stray’d,
And singing, lone, the ling’ring hours,
I shelter in thy honor’d shade.” #robertburnspoetry

Ironman California: Run. The first 5 miles was a slow stumble. Having decided to abandon my fueling and hydration plan due to nausea, I basically survived on potato chips, @cocacola, water, chicken broth and oranges.

The first picture is at the 6 mile mark where I had started running again. It wasn’t fast, but it was much quicker than walking!

First bridge pic is at mile 16. Second bridge pic is at mile 22.

Somewhere in the latter half of the race, at one of the stations, a little Japanese grandma gave me the glow necklace. She was very funny and told me I needed it and it would guide me to the finish! 😁🫡 I mean, who’s gonna tell a grandma “no thanks” who is out volunteering on a race course aid station at 9 PM on a Sunday???

“Done!!!!” ✅ 😂😁 #smileoryouredoingitwrong

Seeing @amyswx and @cranberryspr1te throughout the entire marathon was fantastic!

I finished! And in that last mile, I felt nothing but gratitude, joy and thankfulness for all the sacrifices of everyone who made this day possible especially @amyswx.

Finally, there’s nothing like eating a quesadilla in bed after a 8,000 calorie day, a nice hot shower and dry clothes!!

Ironman California: Bike. The first lap on the bike went just fine. I stopped and restocked at my personal needs bag and started the second lap without incident.

The headwinds really picked up on the way out on the second lap, which meant I’d have a strong tailwind on the way back in. Setting me up for a fast bike split.

Unfortunately, I must’ve swallowed a bug or bacteria on the swim. I spent the entire ride back to transition nauseous, and dry heaving. I stopped several times because of this. Which also meant I lost the advantage of the tailwind, and I was dehydrated/under fuel to start the run.

T2 was very long. I sat in the tent battling nausea, and contemplating if I could complete the run.

Eventually, I decided to get up and just walk until I couldn’t move or missed a cutoff time.

So I threw out my nutrition and hydration plan out the window and decided to eat real food on the run and see if I could recover.

Could I complete the marathon in the condition I was in???

That was the question running through my head.

Massive thanks to @amyswx and @cranberryspr1te for being there at the turn and headed to T2!!!! It meant so much to see you two in a very dark moment.

S/O: @jsperformancelab @cognitivefunctionbicycleshop for all the help getting the @orbea all dialed in.

But my day wasn’t done. Stay tuned for the run update.

Ironman California: Friday. @amyswx flew @cranberryspr1te to Sacramento unbeknownst to me until he “ran” into me at the Village. I was utterly shocked and completely surprised.

Actually, I thought I veered into a cyclist path and got hit! Phew!

After this, we went and checked out the American river and the Sacramento river to scope out the swim course.

Then we took a side trip to San Francisco to check out the Golden Gate Bridge and the city. I’m always amazed at the Golden Gate Bridge!

Day 5: @cranberryspr1te and @erikawarrixx were free and joined @amyswx and me for another trip up #thenarrows at @zionnps! It was a quick trip with rain on the forecast. This. Is a place you don’t want to be in rain as it will flash flood very quickly! Erika and Hawk were free and we had such a great trip the day before we decided to do it again. So fun!!
