FOUR•MONTHS 🎀

Four months of watching these tiny girls grow (they’re finally the size of a newborn), fight for their lives in the NICU (Pepper almost killed us all in labor-thanks Pepper 😂), going viral on Instagram sending the internet into a tizzy, and hitting all their milestones even though we were told they’d be developmentally behind for two years.

Seven months ago Pepper was given an 11% chance of surviving and today they’re both thriving. I may never understand why they (and we) were given such a rough road but I’d do it all again for them. Happy four months Pepper and Leni! Mom and dad couldn’t be prouder! 🩷

A little Pepper-onci with a side of Len-guini! 🤌🏻🤍

Note: We hate to have to say this but after our last post about the twins we’ve been left no choice. Anyone who leaves rude or unkind messages about Pepper and Leni’s names, looks, NICU stay, our parenting style, or anything else related to the twins will be blocked, have their comment removed, and reported.

TWIN UPDATE:
Two weeks ago on Monday 2/23 at 16 weeks and 6 days pregnant we went in for a routine ultrasound for the twins. Our doctor told us they had developed Twin Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTSD), a rare complication in identical twins where there’s an uneven blood supply between the fetuses. Twin B (our donor twin) was giving everything she had to Twin A (our recipient twin) leaving her with no fluid in her sac and no urine in her bladder which meant she wasn’t growing or getting nutrients. Twin A was getting too much blood causing her heart to become enlarged from having to work extra hard.

We saw a specialist that Wednesday and the next day on Thursday we had emergency surgery to save our twins. Our options were:
* kill one twin to save the other (both Chris, myself and our doctor refused to do this)
* terminate the pregnancy since our twins can end up with life long complications (also not an option for Chris and I)
* do nothing but they’d both have a 95% chance of passing away
* do the surgery (Twin A was given a 90% chance of survival and Twin B was given a 50% chance of survival)

We chose to have the surgery at 17 weeks and 2 days pregnant! The doctor doesn’t usually perform the surgery before 18 weeks because of the advanced risks but because our case was so early and severe we couldn’t wait.

The first 24 hours are crucial to see if the twins would survive and we’re thankful to say that both twins survived!! Over a week later during their second post surgery ultrasound they’re both doing even better. We still have a long road ahead of us. I’ll have to be hospitalized between 26-28 weeks so the twins can be monitored full time for risks of strangling each other. The twins will need to be born by 32 weeks and spend weeks potentially months in the NICU to help them develop and grow.

Despite all this we’re optimistic about the future of their health and we are beyond thankful to our surgeon Dr. Chmait, my angel of a nurse Kris, Stephanie and the rest of his team for saving our babies lives! It’s not lost on us how close we were to losing them and we’ll forever be grateful to Dr Chmait and his team! 🤍
