So sad to see this fund is not available this year in Aberdeen despite all other regions taking part. It is so important as a maker for me to keep learning + sharing these skills with others.

I was very fortunate to receive @aberdeen_cc VACMA funding to spend some time learning how to anodise aluminium (adding colour to the surface of aluminium).

First up I did a workshop at the amazing @scottishjewelleryschool followed by some time designing some patterns, testing prints + stamps, acquiring some new kit, then some time to think about it all and now I'm just about ready to do it all by myself and incorporate this into some new work.....

Here's my wee imperfect sketchbook of test prints on paper followed by prints onto metal and then some sketches. Let's see where it goes!

🎨 Now Showing at The Suttie Arts Space
📅 4 July – 27 September 2026

'Silent, Soft, Birds and Breeze' brings together the work of two artists selected by Grampian Hospitals Art Trust from the 2025 Degree Shows at Moray School of Art and Gray’s School of Art.

🔗 Learn more: https://www.ghat-art.org.uk/silent-soft-birds-and-breeze-2025-graduate-award-exhibition/

Annie Scott (Moray School of Art) is a textile artist inspired by the materials, patterns and structures of the built environment. Her work explores the relationship between weaving and urban architecture, drawing connections between the warp and weft of textiles and the forms that shape our cities.

Emily McLatchie (Gray’s School of Art) finds inspiration in the quiet power of nature. Combining painting, photography and sound, she uses foraged and earth-based materials to create thoughtful works that encourage reflection, connection and a deeper appreciation of the natural world.

Together, their work creates a calming and contemplative space for visitors, patients and staff at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Now in its sixth year, the Graduate Exhibition Award supports emerging artists across Grampian and Moray, providing graduates with the opportunity to develop and exhibit their work in a hospital setting. Funded by Creative Scotland, the initiative celebrates creativity while enhancing the healthcare environment.

This week we are looking at artist Alexandra McGregor patchwork quilt artwork for “Aliens, Monsters, Googly Eyes and Galactic Vibes” in The Suttie Art Space, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. Alexandra worked in collaboration with the P6 pupils at Cornhill Primary School to curate and make work for exhibition in ARI.

Here is how she did it!

"I took inspiration straight from the pupils their conversations, their creativity, and their love of sport and transformed used football materials into a series of striking quilts. Basketballs, volleyballs, rugby balls, each one offered its own geometric shapes, colours, textures and visual surprises.

I experimented with carving, weaving and even using sports laces to bind pieces together, exploring how these fragments could form something new, and was interested in the idea that we are all part of a larger patchwork, each piece carrying its own experiences, cultures and stories.

I loved the physical process hammering, cutting, and piecing everything together like a giant jigsaw. Working with unexpected materials always excites me, and seeing people move around the hanging quilts and watching the shadow patterns the quilts create has been such a joy.”

You can see Alexandra’s quilts alongside the artwork of artist Adrian Reid at The Suttie Art Space, on display until 21 June.
