Friends, I remember years ago learning that the Greek root of anthology is a “bouquet or garland of flowers.” Isn’t that a beautiful way of looking at it—a single collection of work by multiple writers as something sweet and floral?

ALL THIS BEAUTY: AN ANTHOLOGY OF CONTEMPORARY FLORIDA WRITERS (University Press of Florida, March 2027), edited by P. Scott Cunningham and Kristen Arnett, has entered its pre-order period, and the first details about the book have now been released , including the featured writers (flowers) included therein!

After 14+ years living in South Florida, I finally *feel* like a Florida writer, and I’m ecstatic to see this table of contents, which includes so many people I’ve met (and taught) since moving here.

Special shoutout to my creative writing colleague at FIU, Campbell McGrath, and all the graduates of our MFA program included here: Elisa Albo, Amelia Badri, Marci Calabretta Cancio-Bello, Anjanette Delgado, Hector Duarte, Patricia Engel, Ariel Francisco, Alexandra Lytton Regalado, Trey Rhone, Ranijun Ruado, Emma Trelles, and Yael Valencia Aldana. Another cheer for Caridad Moro-Gronlier, who completed her MA in Literature at FIU, and another for Isabella Marie Garcia, my former undergraduate student. And those are just the FIU connections I see! (Please forgive any oversights!)

Read an edited excerpt of "nasive/invative" (published in issue 12 of The Islandia Journal) at the @northmiamifl Centennial event, "North Miami Through the Century: Arts, Culture & Placemaking."

Getting to read for the realest, @mccoy_arsimmer whose performance at the book fair last November was hands down the most powerful poetry performance I've ever experienced-and I think she liked my reading, so... the event was worth it to me just for that fr. Also proud to read with my MFA poetry pals, Ethan Torres and @katherinesarts who are both dope as fuck and poets to pay attention to.

I gotta go visit her at the @mocanomi where she's the community program manager and everyone else should go there too because it sounds like they have All sorts of programming, especially for teens and kids, opportunities for artists in the community, and also monthly Jazz on the lawn 700.

Anyways, I finally got the video, so here it is with captions🙏🏼

Last week I was honored to be able to read my poem, "Papers" at the @northmiamifl Centennial Celebration at FIU, alongside some of my poet friends, Ethan Torres and @christhepoet from @creativewritingfiu. It was a beautiful event, with a packed room, sharing stories of North Miami's last 100 years. #poetrycommunity #poems #fiu

Last night Magic City really lived up to its name when Stacey Waite gave a magical reading at FIU!

Once upon a time, Stacey was a student of Denise Duhamel, who mentored and inspired Stacey. A couple years later, I met Stacey and was mentored and inspired by Stacey, who even served as the fourth reader on my MFA thesis. Some years after that, I became colleagues and friends with Denise Duhamel, who has been a perpetual mentor and inspiration to me since I arrived at FIU.

Needless to say, this reunion with two of my all-time favorite #poets in the same place was beautiful and necessary and long overdue, and sharing Stacey with our students was the most inspiring part of all. ❤️📚🏳️‍🌈 #writing #soflo #poetry #writingcommunity

SoFlo Friends, I’ll meet you this evening at the FIU Biscayne Bay Campus where Stacey Waite is going to knock off the socks you’re not wearing on this warm, October night!

At 8 PM, I’ll introduce Stacey, who will read from these beautiful books—and when I say “read,” I mean more like “embody or “bring to life”—and then there will be a Q&A, signing, and reception.

This event is free and open to the public, as all Writers on the Bay Reading Series events are.

I hope you can join us for an extraordinary night of literature and literary camaraderie. ❤️📚🏳️‍🌈 #writing #soflo #poetry #writingcommunity #lgbtqliterature

Friends! Next Thursday night, October 8th, we’ll welcome my guest to the Writers on the Bay Reading Series at FIU, the one and only Stacey Waite!

I met Stacey in 2004 when we were both teaching at the Young Writers Institute in Pittsburgh. That same year I bought Stacey’s first chapbook CHOKE at Caliban Books on Craig Street, giddy for my first glimpse of the beautiful body of work to come.

Since then, I have taught all of Stacey’s books in literature, women’s & gender studies, and creative writing classes, including THE LAKE HAS NO SAINT three weeks ago in my Graduate Hybrid Forms seminar.

Stacey’s brilliant guide to the classroom, TEACHING QUEER, inspires me still and always, and it is on perennial loan to the young teachers in my life.

For 22 years, I’ve considered Stacey a friend, a role model for poetry and pedagogy and living an authentic life, and I cannot wait to introduce my students and our larger FIU and SoFlo communities to this inspiring person and dynamic (that’s an understatement) reader.

You’re invited, SoFlo Friends! 8 PM. FIU Biscayne Bay Campus Bookstore. Reading, Q&A, signing, and reception. Free and open to everyone. ❤️📚🏳️‍🌈 #poetry #writing #writingcommunity #writingcommunityofinstagram #soflo

How lucky are we, my colleagues and I and all our students here in the undergraduate creative wiring and MFA programs at FIU to welcome Ana Menendez as permanent faculty?

This news—and being able to share it widely—is the ultimate TTDS*!

Welcome, Ana! ❤️📚❤️ #writing #writingcommunity #writingcommunityofınstagram

*Thank you in perpetuity, Andrea Gibson, for reminding us to celebrate all the “things that don’t suck.”

Friends, this is the start of my 15th year serving as coordinator for the Writers on the Bay Reading Series here at the MFA in Creative Writing Program at FIU!

All our events are free and open to the public, and all our events come with copious snacks!

The first is coming up next Sunday, September 27 at 4 PM at the Books & Books in Coral Gables!

The annual FIU MFA Alumni Reading showcases work by recent graduates and by program alumni after they publish their first books.

Next week we’ll celebrate the literary accomplishments of five terrific writers: Bryane Alfonso, my student in multiple courses and on whose #fiction thesis committee I had the pleasure of serving; Amelia Badri, who graduated with a #poetry thesis and with whom I thoroughly enjoyed working in the Graduate Lyric Essay Seminar; Griffin Cornwell and Michael Cuervo, both of whom defended #creativenonfiction theses which I was thrilled to direct; and Zachary Granat, who defended a fiction thesis and whom I got to know as a student on the Writers on the Bay crew. I can’t tell you how excited I am to hear all of these writers’ work in their own voices at our beloved indie bookstore.

This will be a stunner of a multi-genre, roundtable read, followed by a catered reception circa 5 PM.

If you’re in Magic City next weekend, come get to know our faculty, current students, and alumni at this always-a-crowd-pleasure kick-off, hosted by program director Les Standiford and yours truly! ❤️📚❤️📚❤️ #writing #writingcommunity
