Last night’s Broken But Beautiful, Artist Talk was intimate, poignant, honest, and deeply vulnerable. @visionarher thank you for your vision and the very layered questions you came up with for this talk.

Together, we explored what it means to hold beauty and brokenness at the same time. Our conversation moved through capitalism, creativity, youth, mental health, adversity, personal and creative journeys, and the experiences that shape not only the work artists create, but who they become along the way.

There was no need to have all the answers. There was simply space to speak, listen, reflect, and witness one another.

Thank you to everyone who chose to spend part of their Friday evening with us, to listen deeply, ask questions, engage in meaningful conversation, and bear witness to these artists and their work.

None of this would have been possible without support from @fccfoundation_ct investing in our youth through workforce development. A special thank you to @citylightsgallery for giving space to our young people to step into leadership and curate such a powerful and necessary exhibition. And to Akiya McKnight @visionarher for pouring into the youth and guiding them through the curating process. Giving youth the opportunity to shape the narrative, make creative decisions, and share their perspectives reminds us just how important it is to not only make space for the next generation, but to trust them with it.

Broken But Beautiful reminds us that brokenness and beauty are not opposites. Sometimes, they exist in the very same place.

This show is up until September 5th. Stop by during gallery hours to see it.

$What does it mean to dream, create, and come of age within a system that often feels like it’s falling apart? Join us for an intimate Artist Talk & Panel Discussion moderated by Akiya McKnight, surrounding Broken But Beautiful: Youth Beneath Capitalism. Friday, August 28, 2026 6:00–8:00 PM City Lights Gallery 265 Golden Hill Avenue, Bridgeport, CT This conversation brings together artists and voices connected to the exhibition to go beyond the artwork and explore the stories, experiences, and ideas behind it. Together, we’ll unpack themes of memory, identity, capitalism, survival, vulnerability, resilience, and the emotional cost of dreaming—particularly through the lens of young people navigating an uncertain world. Come experience the exhibition, hear directly from the artists, ask questions, and be part of a meaningful community conversation. Because Broken But Beautiful isn’t only about what has been fractured. It’s about what we create from the pieces. Presented by Bridgeport Arts & Cultural Council and City Lights Gallery. #BrokenButBeautiful #YouthBeneathCapitalism #ArtistTalk #BridgeportArts #CityLightsGallery$
