I want to say a quick thank you to everyone who came out to support me this weekend for my black belt test in Shorin-Ryu karate! For those who do not know, I began Shorin-Ryu around 7 years ago with sensei mires. I was looking for a martial arts style on the opposite branch of karate from my other system Uechi-Ryu. I was also looking for someone who’s primary focus was kata application over performance. I wanted to focus on making these kata movements mean something! I was introduced to sensei @gmiresjr by @iainabernethy and started my training. I would go in, learn a kata, some bunkai, and I would then bring it back to my Muay Thai/mma gym and try it out. This continued for about 7 years of informal practice as I learned more and more about the styles kata and practical methodology. Then, about 3 months ago, sensei tells me I’ve been doing this long enough, it’s time to get my black belt. Note, I had never technically ranked as it was more an informal sharing of info and kata bunkai. I would technically be going from white to black in one go! The test would include all 12 kata (my first time performing them in-front of anyone), bunkai application, brick breaking, and 30+ rounds of sparring. Then, to make it as hard as possible, I invited multiple martial artists from other karate dojos, Kyokushin practitioners, Muay Thai, judo, and MMA to take part in my 30man fight. My back is still in pain from @bicomango34 throwing me multiple times! However, I got through it and officially got ranked to Shodan in a new style. While I don’t have pics with everyone as about half of you had to leave early, thank you to everyone who showed up and showed love!

A lot of fighters know how to fight… but nobody ever taught them how to promote themselves.

If you have a fight coming up, don’t wait until fight week to start asking people to support you.

Start early.
Share the journey.
Talk about the work, the struggles and the progress.
And most importantly — ask people directly.

Don’t just announce your fight.

Build a story people want to follow.

The better you get at this part of the game, the more valuable you become to yourself, your team and the promotion.
