“Triumphant... Uplifted… Proud of what I’ve accomplished...” 🥹👏❤️ That’s how Backlight artist, Jack Croley, described his experience of performing in The Sound of Music. At Backlight, artists with intellectual & developmental disabilities are no longer lost in the background of the performing arts world. Backlight artists get to experience their well deserved moment in the spotlight and feel “TRIUMPHANT 💪!” It’s so much more than just a play or just a musical. Inclusive Art is the truly BEST kind of art there is.

Pictured: Some of our Backlight Productions Comedy Club members as we said “see you later” to our friend and fellow improviser, Jack. ❤️ We miss you, Jack! One of the beautiful things about what we do at Backlight is getting to share a season (or many seasons) of life with so many talented artists and creatives... Some artists stay for years, decades- even, some for a season, but each person leaves an impact — and we’re grateful for every person who has walked through our doors and become part of our Backlight community. To any of our friends who aren’t able to join us for this next season, please know our doors are always open and we’ll always be cheering you on. And we're thankful we’ll get to still see you again at a Night Out and in our audience!

Student Actors (many of them from Christ Presbyterian Academy) used their love of theatre and their gifts in the performing arts to put Backlight Productions artists in the spotlight. In this special collaboration, we celebrated each other's gifts and built genuine friendships along the way. That beautiful partnership with Christ Presbyterian Academy continues with our next production: the New Works Play Festival! 🎭This time, we'll be performing in CPA's Black Box Theatre, and many of the Backlight artists you saw on stage in The Sound of Music are now the playwrights and storytellers! We're incredibly grateful to Christ Presbyterian Academy for believing in our mission and continuing to invest in INCLUSIVE storytelling. ❤️

Inclusion doesn’t only happen under the spotlight—it happens behind the scenes, too. Our production of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe has been strengthened by two incredible Backlight artists who have contributed behind the scenes. Jack Croley typed the subtitles for the entire play (which we display during the performance to aid audience members) and Shannon Johnstone is assisting our Backlight Youth Artists, helping get everyone into places onstage and backstage during the shows. While they aren’t participating as 'actors' in this production, their tech skills and teaching skills play an essential role in bringing this story to life. Why does this matter? Because artistry doesn’t only live center stage—every form of creative contribution deserves space and recognition! Our hope is to continue creating more opportunities like this, where our students can participate in shows through other ways that also align with their strengths, interests, and abilities. 👏 Thank you, Jack! Thank you, Shannon! Your contributions to this show are incredibly valuable, and we are so grateful for everything you do behind the scenes!

✨Two amazing Backlight Casts. One timeless song. We loved seeing these incredible performers from our “Cast- Do” and “Cast- Re” bring “Do-Re-Mi” to life in choreography rehearsal! Both of these casts fill the room with joy. Backlight’s Sound of Music will perform May 30th & May 31st! #DoReMi #musicaltheater #soundofmusic #backlightproductions

#throwbackthursday to last Summer when our Backlight Playwrights received a standing ovation from the audience, after the debut of their original musical, It All Comes Out In The Wash. We can’t emphasize enough how powerful it is for our Backlight Artists— individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities— to become the ‘Writer’ & ‘Creators’ and be given a creative voice. 🎭This Summer, you have the chance to support our Playwrights by attending our Backlight 10-Minute Play Festival, featuring 12 original plays written by our fabulous writers & acted out by local professionals! 🗓️: Saturday, July 26th at Christ Presbyterian Academy’s Black Box Theatre 🕐: Showtimes 3pm (Plays by: Fernanda Aguilar, Tiffany Adams, Zoey Tucker, Patrick Todd, Ethan Harrell, and Hope McKee) 6pm (Plays by: PeeWee Malone, Bel Hines, Tracey Griffin, Ana-Lise Wadatz, Devin Hunt, and Chandler Matlock) 🎶 & 🚚 (Music & Food Trucks at Intermission) 🎟️: Link in Bio & on our website!

People often ask us, “How do you get your artists to memorize all their lines and content?” Our answer: “The Backlight Marble Challenge!” Backlight staff break down everyone’s individual roles into several weekly goals. Then, Artists practice their material at home, then come into rehearsal ready to perform! ✅ When they nail it, they earn a marble that goes into the group jar. And when that jar is filled? It’s time for an epic cast party! 🥳💕 We’re so proud of our artists for their dedication both at home and in the rehearsal room. Check out this fun footage of Miss Brenda handing out marbles to these deserving actors! 🎉 #BacklightTheatre #MarbleChallenge #TheatreLife #HardWorkPaysOff

🌟 At Backlight, our productions are unique because we proudly feature individuals of ALL abilities! Working together on Inclusive shows allows us to create joyous ensemble experiences (for everyone involved). Our productions are special because we get to promote kindness in our rehearsal rooms and on-stage, prompting audiences to exhibit kindness in our community! 🌟 We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our amazing collaborators at Oddity Improv (@oddityimprov) and to our Backlight families and staff! While Improv could seem nerve wracking for some, YOUR support empowers our improvisations, allows us to perform with NO FEAR, knowing that ALL our voices will be heard and ALL our ideas valued. ✨💕 PS: Everyone is completely fine in the last pic! That’s just @brianmichaeljones acting as a deer that had just been run over. Luckily, “Paramedic Patrick” was there to investigate the scene & save the day! ⬅️ IMPROV! 😂 Check out our Comedy Club Show on Friday at 7pm! @wcpactn Ticket Link in Bio!
