Old shop teacher. New machine. Still learning. 🪵🎣

I was taught never to run wood across the grain on a jointer. A few weeks with this Rikon 16-inch jointer/planer and its helical cutterhead have given me plenty to talk about.

Today’s project: a Driftless Hardwoods white oak bourbon board with antique fishing lures preserved in clear resin. Sharing my results here—follow your machine’s instructions, which still call for feeding with the grain.

So far, I’m impressed with the cutting results. My one gripe? The cast iron tables don’t feel as smooth as my old Delta. Sliding this 14-inch-wide oak board takes some persuasion—and Dad’s elbows aren’t getting younger. 😂

What’s your go-to for smoother feeding: paste wax, a dry glide coating, or something else?

This year we made the trip to the Pine Barrens of New Jersey for the fifth annual Pine Barrens Makers Fest!

Patrick and Carlina of Pine Barren Pallet Works spent months on this amazing event that brought together an incredible community of makers and brands. It was a weekend packed with creativity, inspiration, and plenty of fall fun.

If you love fall themed festivals and artist fairs, definitely add this one to your list for next year!

I took a bit of a chance on this RIKON 25-216H 16” planer/jointer because I could find very few real-world demonstrations from actual owners.

It’s a European-style combination machine—a design commonly seen across the pond but still not very common in American home shops. One machine serves as both a jointer and planer, which gives you serious capacity without sacrificing the floor space required for two separate machines.

After briefly considering a $24,000 Felder—and then remembering who I am—I decided this machine made considerably more sense for my budget and small garage shop.

This first demonstration focuses on the jointer, flattening one face of a 14-plus-inch-wide live-edge white oak board. One machine, one 4-horsepower motor and two different operations.

A big thank-you to Chris Kramer at Woodcraft in New Berlin for the exceptional service, delivery and setup help.

More demonstrations are coming, including the conversion from jointer to planer and the planer in action. I’ll eventually share the positives, the negatives and whether I’d buy it again.

But the early verdict? So far, I absolutely love it.

The @totalboat Pin Resin Challenge 🎳🪵

Makers 🤝 Bowlers.

We teamed up with @totalboat to put a creative spin on the wooden bowling pins built by @jackman_works. Makers and Bowlers broke out the TotalBoat UV Resin and turned each pin into a one-of-a-kind piece.

The finished pins were auctioned off, with proceeds supporting @harvest_912 and @bowlerstoveteranslink, bringing the maker and bowling communities together for two great causes 💪

Four teams. Twenty walk-up songs. One serious strut. 🎳🔥

The teams made their entrances one by one at the Makers-Bakers Classic, each rocking their own walk-up song and the Carolina x Dexter Bowling Boots. And of course, the team captains had to go big in the tall boots.

Now we need to settle it… Which team had the best strut? 👇
