My training is more structured than ever, but will it be enough?

- How fit can I get at 46? - Week 5 -

It’s race week (eek!) and I’m starting to have some doubts.

Sunday’s workout was great. I felt strong, everything was moving well, and I was feeling pretty good about the upcoming race. Then came Monday and let’s just say: it wasn’t the confidence builder you’d hope for 5 days out of the race...

I still feel ridiculously slow when I’m running. And despite all the extra kilometres and structured training, I’m not entirely convinced I’m getting any faster.

In Istanbul, we somehow managed an average running pace of 5:25 min/km. Don’t ask me how. Right now, I’m wondering whether I can actually pull that off again.

Of course, we’ve only been working with our coach for about six weeks, so expecting dramatic improvements already is probably a bit optimistic. The bigger goal is the sub-70 next year, after all.

So now it’s taper week. For our last races, I relied on ChatGPT for my training plan and somehow, I managed to arrive at both starting lines with my WHOOP recovery in the lower yellow range. Not quite the fresh and fully recovered athlete I had in mind.

This time, the coach is in charge, and I’m curious to see whether we can get the tapering right 😅.

The target for Saturday? Somewhere around 1:14–1:15.

Now I just have to hope my running legs are faster than they currently feel.

Well, guess we’ll find out on Saturday.
