WAIT FOR IT!
What an incredible encounter in one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. 🦥🌴

Coming face to face with this sloth at Bluff Beach — almost at eye level — was one of those rare travel moments I’ll never forget. Absolutely magical. ✨

Warning: graphic text. We’ll spare you the more graphic images.

Who isn’t being spared the horrific images? Naturgy and MiAmbiente.

The monkey was first seen at Pipa Beach with a detached hand and exposed arm bones. Both of his palms were burned. He retreated into the jungle and was located Monday. Neighbors tried to help, but his condition was beyond saving. He had to be put down.

Yesterday September 23 saw the electrocution death of two sloths, one mother Two-Toed in the morning, discovered with its surviving baby clinging to her. The baby is pictured here, which is the least graphic image we can share. The baby is in bad shape, her eyes burnt.

Another sloth was found yesterday in Las Cabañas with one paw completely blown off from the impact of the live wire.

Las Cabañas, Big Creek, Paunch; three electrocution-caused deaths in one day’s time.

For years, the community has been advocating for powerlines to be insulated. The Impact Study for the roadwork suggested the same; insulate or bury. To Naturgy’s credit, some powerlines have been replaced with insulated ones, but more need to be replaced to conserve wildlife.

On September 7, 2025, readers of The Bocas Breeze reported that new powerlines were being installed in Big Creek. They were “hot” lines, not insulated. They were told insulation was unnecessary because they were “too high” for arboreal creatures. We reached out to Naturgy twice, but could not confirm this.

What’s clear is that in less than 24 hours, three animals died from electric shock. Electrocutions often cause internal burns, leading to slow, agonizing deaths. While these tragedies were discovered, many animals are injured and disappear into the jungle, suffering out of view as their troop loses members, and the population wanes.

🦥 Ways to Help 🐒

Donate to @keepbocaswild, building rope bridges and Bocas del Toro’s first Sloth Rescue and Rehab Center. There’s also a digital petition for Naturgy to insulate more powerlines.

POV : t’as séjourné au Panama et ta pellicule ressemble à ça 🇵🇦

Mon amour pour l’Amérique centrale et du Sud 😩✨.
J’ai officiellement coché les pays que je voulais absolument visiter sur ce continent.

Hâte de voir quels voyages mes prochains congés me réservent 🤪

A month later and my 19-day adventure through Costa Rica and Panama is still something I think about every day. I’ve never experienced anything like my second trip with @givevolunteers . We had many adventures across Costa Rica like zip lining, white water rating, and hiking down to the most insane waterfall in La Fortuna. We then spent four days volunteering at @fincalashormigas , an off-grid, self sufficient permaculture farm, where made a kind of cement called cob out of natural materials, planted ginger in garden beds, and gave some extra love to the trees and gardens by clearing the space around them. We were given the opportunity to meet and learn from Indigenous peoples of Costa Rica while on this farm, and if you know me, you know how much that means. One of the most meaningful moments was getting to sit down with members of the Bri Bri and take part in a cacao ceremony which is something I’ll never forget. With @centro_educativo_caranos we helped a local school prep and maintain their gardens so kids can grow their own foods. We stayed with host families who I quickly came to love, and even learned to make chocolate from scratch starting with cacao pods.

We walked across the boarder to Panama as GIVE’s very first group there. While we didn’t volunteer, we dove deep into the culture with help from our incredible guide, @crossingwithsugar . We went snorkeling, island hopping, and explored Bocas del Toro and the old streets of Panama City. We learned about aquatic life and spotted many animals I never thought I’d see outside of a zoo like monkeys, sloths, dart frogs, and toucans. I am so grateful for all five of my guides who had so much to teach us and made this experience unforgettable.

Two more beautiful countries explored thanks to @givevolunteers and by the grace of God.

From encounters with howler monkeys and dolphins to seeing the stars like I never have before, I was overwhelmed by the beauty of God's creation. On this trip, I realized how often we go along our busy lives and forget to be grateful for the little things, like a shower, cold drink of water, or dry clothes. I worked alongside so many beautiful people @fincaslashormigas and in the wonderful community of Gandoca, Costa Rica, @centro_educativo_caranos, that taught me to appreciate the beauty of life and living in the present.

In the wise words of @crossingwithsugar, live your life as if you ate icecream that day 😊 Be grateful for every moment and always find joy because it's a great day to be alive
