James Painting

James was an incredibly talented popper whose innovative moves and infectious spirit lit up every dance floor. You couldn’t help but be captivated when he danced especially when he did his signature move of the Cobra.Although he left us ten years ago, his passion for life and dance continues to inspire us and we will always cherish the times when we all jammed together.

Rhythm & Moves: Popin’ Pete’s Musical Inspirations

What I love about the Pop Shop is the time and opportunity it gives our creative community to experience &share the layers of passion, training and inspiration that makes a dancer. If you don’t know Pete @popinpete, he’s been dancing since he was a teenager in 1978. Now 62, he’s still humbled by the dance and inspired by drummers, different dance styles and movements. Still playful with how he approaches the dance and motivated more than ever to excite and inspire people to give it a go.

Today is a year since we opened the shop in my home borough of Croydon. ‘South London to the World’ has always been something I felt strongly about, but here the world came to south London. It was dope. I felt so passionate about this project. Croydon gets a bad rap. Our kids need quality things to do with their lesiure time. Things that are affordable. Things that inspire them to achieve greatness in their lives; whatever that might look like.

The Pop Shop welcomed dancers from all over the world, from all over the UK and from all over south London. There were professional dancers, Parkinson’s sufferers (shout out @poppingforparkinsons), kids, local homeless people, Team GB Boxers and random shoppers that stopped and were drawn in to have a groove.

Thank you to everyone who believed in this project. To the Mayor of London @mayorofldn and his Borough of Culture concept, to Croydon Culture team @culturecroydon, Arts Council England @aceagrams , to Croydon CVA @cvacroydon , Centrale & Whitgift Centre @centralewhitgift and Croydon BME forum @croydonbmeforum . Of course my thanks to the artists and my team, and to everyone who came through and shared in the love. This culture is a movement and you can’t do anything event like this on your own.

If you’d like this dope community resource in your town or city, please drop me a line kate@scannersinc.com. I’m hoping that we will have our gorgeous unit back in the heart of Croydon in 2025 for more creative endeavours.

Watch this space ... or better still advocate for this to be our reality, comment below!

Peace & love ✌🏼&❤️

📍UPDATE: Atlanta students had the opportunity to learn Swahili on an App they helped designed with their counterparts in Kenya. This was a key moment for both the Avast Foundation and The Imperative Fund.
