Did you know August is National Black Business Month? 🎉

At Sojourn Strategies, we’re celebrating by shining a spotlight on the incredible Black-owned businesses that help us excel and make an impact. From innovative website design to empowering our storytelling and leadership, these partners are integral to our success. We’re grateful to be in community with these incredible organizations.

👉🏾 Swipe to learn more about them.

Here are some eye-opening facts about Black entrepreneurship in the U.S.:

💡 Although Black individuals make up 14.2% of the population, Black-owned businesses represent only 3% of all U.S. businesses.

💡In 2020 alone, Black business owners created over 48,000 new jobs and contributed $1.7 billion to the economy.

🤔 Just imagine the growth potential if Black-owned businesses received support proportional to their population share!

👇🏾Drop a recommendation for a Black-owned business you love in the comments.

Let’s uplift and support Black entrepreneurship this month and every month! 🙌🏾

QUOTED: On Thursday night an update to cybersecurity software from a vendor called Crowdstrike crashed computers in Australia from banks, to ATMs, to airports, as time passed the update spread and impacted computer systems around the world. I spoke to the New York Times about how avoidable this cause was by both the vendor who released the update and the clients who blindly installed it to every one of their computers at once. #crowdstrike #cybersecurity #bsod #blueScreenOfDeath

“Anyone can become digital activists - aka hacktivists. With some guidance and passion, you can create positive changes in this world though creative uses of technology, regardless of your background, skillset, and experience.”

This was the message @geminiimatt and I shared during our presentation on Hacktivism for Social Change at HOPE XV, NYC - a gathering filled with hackers, activists, and technologists to share knowledge, discuss hacking culture, and promote information freedom and security.

By emphasizing the human element in both of our talks, we aimed to empower individuals to use their technical skills for social good and make sure this knowledge is accessible for everyone.

Link to the presentation from our talk - with all the resources: bit.ly/hope2024hacktivism101

Through this event, I also had so much fun meeting talented hackers who are doing incredible things to protect and advance the good in this world.

The world might be rough but we humans are powerful when we work together to make it better for others.

Hack the Planet! Let’s go!

What is your local public transit like? This is mine. At @CryptoHarlem_usa we reach folks to challenge all assumptions. Usually surveillance takes digital AND physical forms, often times in the name of public safety. Be vigilant, check the crime stats, know all the data not just what backs your perspectives, learn about surveillance technologies and methods. Less walls more bridges, less spying eyes more kind ones.

Globally, when others do not trust their fellow humans or when they don't see them as humans, suspicion leads to criminalizing entire identities. When there is the lack of evidence to validate those suspicions, surveillance rises. Guilt , shame, and scrutiny can lead to the idea that no evidence was found using surveillance because there wasn't enough surveillance. The downward spiral continues. The surveillers believe that the overpoliced "must be hiding something", there is no room for the idea that the surveillers could be wrong.
