It’s been a week since we closed King Kirby, and with a little distance from it, we can officially say: that was a hell of a ride.

The Tom Kane Theatre, for two weekends, played to amazing crowds, celebrated Jack Kirby’s 109th birthday, hosted a pop up Kirby Museum, welcomed some serious Kirby fans into the building, and capped it off with a fantastic conversation with playwrights Crystal Skillman and Fred Van Lente and the Jacked Kirby crew.

And somehow we turned three weirdly shaped projection panels, a pile of comic book art, a great script, and a very game group of artists into our own little corner of the Kirby universe.

That’s the fun part of doing this at bkONE. Every show completely changes the room. King Kirby came in loud, colorful, strange, funny and larger than life. Then we packed it all up and started figuring out what the hell we’re doing next.

Huge credit to the cast, crew, artists, collaborators and everyone who came out and made this production what it was.

And of course, Tommy Lombardozzi was a big part of the DNA of this one. His love of comics and Kirby helped get us here, and we were proud to get this thing onstage.

King Kirby was an experiment that worked.

We’re pretty damn proud of it.

And we have a feeling the King may not be done with bkONE just yet.

Saw the updated version of Fred Van Lente & Crystal Skillman’s KING KIRBY play last night at the Tom Kane theatre in Industry City, BKNY, and it was great. Loved the additional Steve Ditko scenes. And the actress who played Roz Kirby was the anchor the bittersweet story needed. Big Ups to BKOne Productions and all the actors for pulling off a complicated tale of creation and legacy. Great to see everyone who came out including Mike DeVito and (former studio mate) George O’Connor <— who stood in for the late/great Tommy Lombardozzi — who we all celebrated including Jack Kirby — with birthday cakes in a special edition of The Jacked Kirby podcast.

And just like that… the theatre is empty.

For two incredible weekends, this space was filled with the life, work and imagination of Jack Kirby—brought to the stage by a remarkable cast and crew and embraced by sold-out audiences, Kirby fans, friends and family.

King Kirby was everything we hoped it could be: bold, joyful, moving and deeply connected to the community that gathered around it. We’re incredibly proud of what we created together—and grateful to everyone who helped make it such a success.

Now the chairs are stacked, the set is coming down and the Tom Kane Theatre is becoming a blank slate once again.

Ready for Brooklyn ONE’s next production.
The next art installation.
The next immersive experience.
The next community connection.
The next reason to bring all of you together.

That’s the beautiful thing about this space: something ends, and immediately, possibility moves back in.

Thank you for taking this journey with the King. Now we get to imagine what comes next. ❤️

👑 CLOSING DAY. ONE FINAL JOURNEY WITH THE KING.

Today, we take the stage for the final performance of King Kirby after an incredible run filled with sold-out audiences, passionate Kirby fans, and so much love from the people who understand why Jack’s story matters.

Last night’s talkback with the Jacked Kirby podcast, playwrights Crystal Skillman and Fred Van Lente, and our special guests was the perfect celebration of Jack’s life, work, and enduring legacy. Thank you to everyone who joined us, shared their stories, and helped make the room feel electric.

Endless gratitude to director Bill Coulter and our phenomenal cast: Mike Noto, Danielle Johnson, Edunn Levy, Gil Ron, Steven Fazzolari, and Clarke Herring. And to Nicole Yagar, Cat Cusick, our artists, animators, designers, technicians, volunteers, and every member of the crew who brought Jack’s world to life—you made this production possible.

This show also carries the love and spirit of our late co-art curator and dear friend Tommy Lombardozzi, whose passion for Kirby helped lead us here.

Thank you to the Kirby Museum, the Kirby fans and family, our playwrights, and everyone who supported us in telling the story of the man behind so many legends.

Journey with the King one more time—today at brooklynONE.

Of course, Jack Kirby’s story is never truly finished being told…so who knows? Maybe you’ll see us again.

You’re the King Jack. 👑

Some people are simply meant to direct a particular piece—and William “Bill” Coulter was the perfect person to bring King Kirby to life.

Bill is a true comic-book aficionado and an unapologetic nerd in the very best sense of the word. He came into this production with a deep knowledge of the medium, a genuine passion for Jack Kirby and a clear understanding of why Kirby’s story matters. That passion was present in every choice he made.

But Bill is also a true Brooklyn theatre legend. For more than 20 years, he led the drama program at Fort Hamilton High School, directing every major production and helping generations of young artists discover their confidence, take risks and find their voices. He is a professional actor and director with decades of experience—but what makes Bill special is the humanity, patience and generosity he brings into every rehearsal room.

Watching him build this production with our actors and creative team has been an absolute gift. He understood that King Kirby needed the energy and imagination of a comic book, but also the emotional truth of the man behind all those legendary creations.

We are incredibly proud to welcome William Coulter as a one of our Resident Directors at brooklynONE productions. This feels like the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Bill and for bkONE—and we couldn’t have asked for a better artist to lead this production.

Thank you, Bill, for your vision, your passion and everything you poured into King Kirby. Long live the King—and long live the nerds who understand why his story must be told.

It’s all about the craft at bkONE.

Throwing it back to our absolutely iconic Savage in Limbo talkback with John Patrick Shanley—one of many moments from that conversation we still can’t wait to share.

We opened our season in conversation with New Love playwright Adam Szymkowicz, and tonight, we continue celebrating the writers behind the work with a special post-show King Kirby event featuring playwrights Crystal Skillman and Fred Van Lente, the Jacked Kirby Podcast, and other special guests.

See the show. Meet the artists. Join the conversation.

Tonight at 8 PM at the Tom Kane Theatre—and it’s going to be special.

What an incredible celebration of the King! 👑🎂

We wished Jack Kirby a very happy 109th birthday with cake, an amazing crowd, and electric energy throughout the room. Having the Jack Kirby Museum with us made the night even more special as we celebrated the life, legacy, imagination, and lasting impact of Jacob Kurtzberg—the one and only King of Comics.

Happy birthday, Jack. Thank you for giving the world so much to dream about. Long live the King! ✨
