7 years. Countless whiteboard nights, side jobs, sweat, breakdowns, breakthroughs… and just like that, I’m officially done being a professional student (as I call myself). I started this journey back in high school, told it would be too hard, too rigorous, and maybe not the right fit. But I did it anyway. And I wouldn’t change a thing.

Being a physical therapist to me means more than just helping people move again. It’s about restoring confidence, giving people the tools to take ownership of their recovery, and empowering them to live fully whether its on and off the field, in work or just in life.

Over the last three years, I’ve had the chance to work in nearly every setting; ortho, neuro, acute care and even spent part of my clinical education in Italy, learning from a completely different healthcare system and perspective. Every experience made me more curious, more adaptable, and more certain that I chose the right path.

And now, I get to do just that. I’m stepping into the world of outpatient rehab, working with orthopedic and athletic populations, and staying open to wherever this career takes me. Whether it’s neuro, vestibular, or something I haven’t even thought of yet, I’m ready to take it on.

To my family~ thank you for holding me when I couldn’t hold myself up
To my friends~ thank you for reminding me of my light when everything felt dark
To my classmates~ thank you for the laughs, the late nights, and for being there when things got heavy… ESPECIALLY my Shayla
To my mentors~ thank you for humbling me, challenging me, and showing me what I was capable of

This degree didn’t come easy. There were plenty of moments I felt drained, overwhelmed, and unsure if I could keep going. But I did. I kept showing up, even when I didn’t feel ready. I figured it out one step at a time, and every challenge taught me something and made me stronger, whether I liked it or not.

The hard days didn’t break me, they built me

And with all that said I can finally call myself Cristina Santamaria, DPT 🩺 🎓
