POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

In Seoul last week for Frieze, a de Young Museum group gathered for a special studio visit with artist Guimi You, whose work from our first solo show is in the collection.

An intimate opportunity to spend time with You in her studio, learn more about her practice, and experience her work in the place where it takes shape. We’re grateful for the generosity and insight she shared, and for the chance to connect with Seoul’s vibrant contemporary art community. Can’t wait to come back!

I am dedicating a couple of posts this week to the spectacular Mildred Howard @mildredhoward and her magnificent exhibition, “Mildred Howard: Poetics of Memory,” at the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA).

We begin with a slideshow from the wonderful dinner Trish Bransten @trishbransten of the iconic Rena Bransten Gallery @renabranstengallery hosted the evening before Mildred’s opening. It was a beautiful celebration of an extraordinary artist and her remarkable body of work.

Next, I’ll share a gorgeous reel taking you through the entire exhibition and include some amazing image from the opening night on June 11…my birthday! I spent a couple of days really studying the show, looking closely at the work and photographing everything. I’m so excited to share this magnificent exhibition with you through my eyes.

A MUST SEE exhibition: “Mildred Howard: Poetics of Memory” is on view at the Oakland Museum of California @oaklandmuseumca through October 18.❤️

"Taking the Lunder Institute Think Tank on the road to the Bay Area was truly extraordinary. Over an incredible week of site visits, our cohort engaged in profound discussions around archiving, documentation, and artist legacy building. My deepest gratitude goes out to all the collaborators who came together for this unforgettable gathering. There is much more to explore and these conversations will definitely guide future work in the field. We look forward to sharing these conversations through the Lunder Institute Audio Archive." —Erica Wall, Lunder Institute Director

"Bay Area Think Tank: Artist Legacies and Archives" dove deep into the power of archiving, documentation, and the art of legacy building. We were privileged to be joined by artists Mildred Howard (@mildredhoward), Amalia Mesa-Bains (@dr_amalia_says), Stephanie Syjuco (@ssyjuco), Johanna Poethig (@johannapoethigsilver), and Angelica Muro (@muroprojects), among other thought partners for critical dialogue at four major Bay Area institutions. Thank you to all who participated!

Highlights:

- "Archival Dinner" prepared by Ling Chen Kelley, Hung Liu's son, at Hung Liu's studio(@hungliuestate).

- Curator-led tour of “Some Particular Heaven” at Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive(@bampfa) and an exploration of preservation at the Bancroft Library.

- Visiting Mildred Howard’s major retrospective, "Poetics of Memory," at OMCA(@oaklandmuseumca) with the artist, as well as the Hung Liu installation

- Translating institution-building and legacy alongside the de Young’s public program and interpretation teams(@deyoungmuseum).

- Exploring "Archive Room: Amalia Mesa-Bains" at the Cantor Arts Center(@cantorartscenter) with Dr. Mesa-Bains, who shared insights on the process of archiving.

Full audio sessions will be added to the Lunder Institute Audio Archive, launching publicly in 2027 in celebration of our ten-year anniversary.

Last week, the gallery’s registrar Natalie Dutton and I visited the de Young for the opening of “Superficial Matters: Artists from the Svane Gift and Beyond,” an exhibition highlighting recent acquisitions, many made possible by the Svane Family Foundation’s support.

We also paid homage (first slide) to Sandow Birk’s spectacular painting of San Quentin, brilliantly situated among the museum’s 19th-century California and Hudson River School paintings. Everyone seems to do a double take when they read the label and realize they’re looking at a contemporary painting by Birk, from his “Prisonation” series, hanging among its historic precedents. It’s a wonderful bit of curatorial placement—and a reminder of just how deeply Sandow’s work engages the history of American landscape painting while turning that tradition toward the social and political realities of the prison-industrial complex.

You can see much more of Birk’s work in “Sandow Birk: An Illustrated History of the Present,” his 30-year career survey at Catharine Clark Gallery, opening Saturday, August 29, from 2–4pm, with remarks by the artist at 3pm.

Also pictured in the slides is Claudia Schmuckli, Chief Curator of Contemporary Art and Programming at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, who gave insightful remarks about the curatorial premise behind the artworks’ selection. Other images from “Superficial Matters” are by artists Wesaam Al-Badry, Maria A. Guzmán Capron, Christiane Lyons, Ruby Neri, Daisy May Sheff, Lorna Simpson, Sunny A. Smith, and Stephanie Syjuco. Gratitude to Svane, the de Young, and their acquisitions, which are game changing opportunities for artists and their galleries. Congratulations to all the artists and a special shoutout to Stephanie Syjuco and Sandow Birk, whose careers @cclarkgallery represents. @ssyjuco @sandowbirk @deyoungmuseum @cschmuckli @svanefoundation #nataliedutton

“Leonora: Arrangement in Radiant Magenta and Cadmium Red Light,” 2021, is included in “Superficial Matters: Artists from the Svane Gift and Beyond” now on view @deyoungmuseum August 15, 2026 – April 11, 2027, curated by Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art and Social Justice, Axelle Toussaint:
“In Western visual culture, appearances and other forms of outward presentation are often devalued as superfluous and superficial-sensuous at best, deceptive at worst. By contrast, value is typically assigned to the idea of a metaphysical depth where authentic selfhood would presumably reside. This hierarchy, which privileges substance over surface, has historically been gendered, with women and femininity being persistently associated with appearance, ornament, and display. The eight contemporary Bay Area artists featured…confront this split between substance and appearance, examining how it has shaped-and constrained-representations of womanhood.” @axll

For book of the week we have Wangechi Mutu: I Am Speaking, Are You Listening? by Claudia Schmuckli

Wangechi Mutu’s bold sculptures, videos and watercolors explore and define the black woman’s place in society and culture, and her evocative work continues to captivate and enthrall all who see it.

Schmuckli’s book pairs her own incisive analysis of Mutu’s work with an exhaustive and intimate interview, where Mutu’s Afrofuturist totems are examined through a topical lens.

Available in the store.

Spent a phenomenal afternoon immersed in the dream-like worlds of Nengi Omuku at the de Young museum.
Huge thank-you to my brilliant friend Natasha Becker, Curator of African Art at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, for the invitation to celebrate this incredible opening. Witnessing Nengi’s unique practice of painting beautiful, reflective counter-narratives directly onto traditional Nigerian sanyan fabric is an absolute masterclass in reclaiming history and identity through fine art.
This is exactly the kind of deep, intentional storytelling and institutional visibility that the arts community needs right now. Absolute congratulations to both Nengi and Natasha on a beautiful, powerful exhibition! 🎨✨

Welcome in the epicenter of the art world! Here: Claudia Schmuckli, Chief Curator at the De Young Museum in talk with Leiko Ikemura to dicover her work at the Lisson Gallery LA for the USA!

@lisson_gallery Now open in Los Angeles:
Lisson Gallery presents ‚Leiko Ikemura: Riding Horizon.‘

For her first exhibition in Los Angeles, Leiko Ikemura presents a range of works produced over the past decade that explore the relationship between the female body and the natural world; between the heavens and the horizon line, or as she describes it: „the place where two worlds come together“.

Through her fantastical treatment of the landscape painting genre, entering into the realms of reflection, dreamtime and even of conflict, the artist conjures up an otherworldly utopia in which humans and nature coexist within the melting vastness between the heavens of the cosmos and the oceanic spaces below.

24 February - 28 March 2026
at 1037 N. Sycamore Ave, Los Angeles

50 years ago today Concorde began supersonic passenger service.
It’s been 23 years since it ended.
The most inspiring aspect of touring our book on Concorde has been the full force of fans of Concorde at all of our appearances.
People loved the idea of Concorde, it inspired generations. Getting to meet the community at these events has been an inspiration.

With Tom Brokaw in the cockpit of Concorde Alpha Delta at the @intrepidmusem
Brilliant and hilarious interview with @debbiemillman at @cooperhewitt NY
With @clarevivier celebrating her new foreword in her @shopclarev silver lake boutique
With @sebastianconran at @vamuseum London to hear from the source
A view from the V&A audience perspective
And most recently with Clare and @cschmuckli in San Francisco

With thanks to our publisher @prestel_publishing our editor @laduelala and every single person who came out to celebrate Supersonic.

This week marked a major moment for Rose B. Simpson across the Bay Area–at SFMOMA, a 24-foot bronze installation, powerful cars at the de Young, and a newly acquired ceramic work at the Cantor.

Three institutions, three materials—bronze, steel, and clay—one visionary artist. If you haven’t seen the works yet, now’s the time to make the rounds.
