The Gold Standard in exercise science and personal training

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Last week, Grad Students, Staff and Researchers from KHS and CCCARE attended the #CSEP2026 conference in Edmonton. We are proud of the impact and leadership our folks have in clinical exercise physiology education and research!

Special congratulations to:

- Madeleine Noble for her presentation and panel discussion sharing our programs' advancements in experiential and work-integrated learning

- Hannah Gallichan for being a finalist for the graduate student presentation award - poster presentation MSc

- Rhiannon Braid for receiving the CSEP Student Travel Award

Congratulations to our former MSc student @leslieternes for her presentation at the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) @csep_scpe about the Multiple Myeloma Exercise for Individuals Awaiting and Following Treatment (MOTIVATE): A Randomized Controlled Feasibility Trial!

Great job!!! 👏👏👏

✅Day 171 - 4 days on the west coast - doing science, making friends and yapping for days on end! Doesn’t get much better than this🤞

Grateful for these experiences 💫

Until next time!! @csep_scpe

Well, that’s a wrap. First poster presentation for my PhD research (just the qualitative data). Thank you CSEP 2026 for the opportunity to share my work. And thank you to everyone who stopped to ask about my work and share their own experiences in trying to take care of their wellness as practitioners. And finally, thank you to those who stopped by and appreciated the design of my poster, mine was definitely “which one doesn’t look like the others…” #betterposter #personaltrainers #wellness

⚡️✈️ All aboard and on the way to Edmonton, Alberta, for the 2026 Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) Conference. In less than 24 hours, I’ll be talking about using measurement of developmental age - and controlling for physiological development - to make player/talent identification more equitable and fair, to anyone who will listen!

23 September, marks my professional day:
Happy Clinical Exercise Physiology Day to all Clinical Exercise Physiologists locally and globally!🥳🎊🎉
Today, we celebrate World Clinical Exercise Physiology Day, an annual initiative that highlights the role of Clinical Exercise Physiologists in promoting health, preventing disease, and supporting quality of life.

Clinical Exercise Physiologists apply evidence-based practice by assessing an individual's health, fitness, and clinical needs before prescribing safe, personalised exercise interventions, particularly for people living with chronic conditions, recovering from illness, or managing complex health concerns.

⚡️🎓 Happy to confirm that I’ll be presenting two of my recent research studies at two upcoming Canadian conferences, the Tannenbaum Institute for Science in Sport (TISS) Conference in September, and the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology (CSEP) Conference in October. This research has built upon my previous work quantifying the fitness, as well as the training and game load, of Canadian soccer players, at both the amateur youth and senior professional levels. If you’re planning on attending either of these Conferences, be sure to come by and check it out!

The ACSM updated its resistance training guidelines for the first time in 17 years, and it’s one of the most rigorous evidence syntheses on lifting ever published. 137 systematic reviews, 30,000+ participants, and an umbrella review methodology that replaces the 2009 position stand.

For strength: load is the primary variable. ≥80% 1RM, ≥2 sessions/week, 2–3 sets per exercise, full range of motion. Straightforward, and consistently supported across the evidence base.

For hypertrophy: volume is the driver. ≥10 sets per muscle group per week, with a broad load range, muscle growth occurs anywhere from ~30% to 100% 1RM when proximity to failure is adequate. The 8–12 rep “hypertrophy zone” isn’t wrong, but calling it a requirement is an oversimplification the evidence doesn’t support.

For power: it gets explicit attention in this update, which is overdue. Power declines faster than strength with aging and is one of the strongest predictors of functional independence, gait speed, and fall risk in older adults. The prescription: moderate loads (30–70% 1RM), low-to-moderate volume, and intentional speed during the concentric phase.

Two findings worth highlighting for general audiences: training to absolute failure isn’t required, 2–3 reps in reserve produces equivalent strength and hypertrophy outcomes. And complex periodization schemes don’t consistently improve results for the average healthy adult. Consistency and effort beat program complexity.

The public health reality cuts through the rep-range debates: only ~26% of adults meet both aerobic and resistance training guidelines. Among adults 65+, that number drops to ~15%. The evidence gap isn’t program optimization, it’s that most people aren’t lifting at all.

Strength training in perimenopause is one of the most well-evidenced interventions available for women at this stage.

As oestrogen declines, muscle mass becomes harder to maintain, bone density reduces, and metabolic function changes. Resistance training addresses all of these simultaneously.

The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology and the British Menopause Society both identify progressive resistance training as a first-line recommendation for perimenopausal women.

Whether you have been lifting for years or have never picked up a weight, the evidence suggests that starting now produces meaningful benefits.

How you start matters. A programme built around your current capacity and your specific stage will serve you better than anything generic.

I hope this helps.

Much love, Anna 🧡

Kristin Campbell shares great insights on the roles exercise may have in managing side effects of cancer treatment in this July 2026 article on healthing.ca

Thanks to @csep_scpe for supporting the production of this article; a great platform to share with readers the importance of moving through and beyond cancer.
