Life has a funny way of coming full circle. You see, way back in the year 2000, just months after surviving the apocalyptic Y2K bug, I picked up my very first BMX bike. Back then, I was completely enthralled by @xgames and must have tried every sport they had, from inline to skateboarding, snowboarding, and most importantly, BMX. For whatever reason, I just took to BMX, which is funny considering I progressed way slower on a bike than I did a board.

Back then, everything I knew about BMX, I learned from TV. That is until one day, while perusing a bookstore, I purchased my very first issue of Ride BMX (#50). I had zero clue BMX magazines were even a thing. Suddenly, a whole new world opened up, well beyond what the X-Games could show me. And if you know anything about Ride, you know Dan’s Comp was a major advertiser. After what was probably my 4th or 5th read-through, I noticed Dan’s Comp’s address: Mt. Vernon, IN. There was no way this place was close to me, was there? Why would it be? That’s in the middle of nowhere Indiana, after all. But to my surprise, the shop was right in my backyard.

I visited Dan’s for the first time in late 2000, quickly became a repeat customer, and spent every dollar of birthday and Christmas money on bike parts until I got my first job, and I STILL spent everything on bike parts…

Fast forward to 2008. I was already deep into all things BMX and riding nonstop despite going to college, having a full-time job, a girlfriend, moving out, and everything else that comes with entering the “real world.” BMX was always there, and I had become good friends with the people at Dan’s. I finally landed a job in the call center in 2008. In fact, that catalog cover was shot while I was in the middle of the hiring process, set to start the next week. It was a dream situation for a kid who grew up following the brand.

I say all this because last week I had the absolute pleasure of hosting Dan’s Comp’s 40th anniversary with lifelong friends, our team, and the very editor/director of the old magazine that first got me hooked. THANK YOU to everyone who supports our dream. Full circle indeed. #danscomp
