POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

While a lot of the state’s larger schools took their talents to Emporia and Olathe over the weekend, many teams that will be racing in Wamego next month opted for an early season look at one of the toughest courses statewide.

Over 700 athletes representing over 50 programs made their way up and down the grueling hills of the Wamego Country Club, getting their first taste of the terrain that will host the 4A, 2A, and 1A state championships in October. Here’s a look at how Saturday’s action unfolded.

Corbin Starkweather of Buhler (4A) put together a strong start to her junior season and is emerging as one of the top distance runners in 4A. She currently sits 3rd overall and 1st in 4A in the 1600m (5:07.43), 16th overall and 2nd in 4A in the 800m (2:22.65), and 6th overall and 1st in 4A in the 3200m (11:15.41). That range across all three events shows both strength and versatility, and leading 4A in the 1600 and 3200 this early signals a big season ahead. She took 14th last year in the 1600m with a time of 5:45.69 and has already crushed that mark this year. With the way she’s progressed, expect her to be right in the mix for multiple medals this spring as she continues her breakout trajectory. #sportsinkansas
