Beginner’s luck is a real thing. 🦈

I met my dad at Padaro Beach to test SharkNark™. On his very first flight, he found a great white shark.

So naturally, we took the experiment one step further. Simply because my dad and I weren’t dressed for the occasion (not out of fear😉), we asked a gentleman to help us test the alert pipeline.

Our guide put on the SharkNark wearable and entered the water while we knew a white shark was in the area. During the flight, we actually had three great whites visible on screen at the same time—and all three were correctly detected and boxed by the system.

An alert was then sent from the drone system to the wearable.

That’s the idea behind SharkNark: not to remove sharks from the ocean and not to create fear, but to give people more information about what’s sharing the water with them.

Would you want a heads-up if a shark was nearby?

I know I would. 🦈

Juvenile white sharks somewhere along the California coast.

It’s been a while since I’ve had this many young whites in front of the drone at once. I spent the day out with @sharkhuahua.yt filming these guys. San Diego used to have some pretty consistent juvenile aggregations, but in recent years a lot of that activity seems to have shifted farther up the Southern California coast.

The water was pretty murky, but with the sun out we were still able to get some solid looks at them from above. It was cool seeing just how many juveniles were hanging around in such a relatively small stretch of coastline.

Definitely worth heading a little farther up the coast to spend some time with these guys.

🦈 SHARK NEWS: CSU Long Beach researchers are studying whether fear of sharks is learned and whether changing their reputation could make it easier to protect them.

🧠 THE BIG PICTURE: Research suggests babies aren't innately afraid of sharks. Movies, news coverage and other bad press may shape that fear as we get older.

🌊 WHAT'S NEXT: Researchers want to help us understand that sharks are mostly uninterested in people. The numbers back that up.There were just 29 unprovoked great white shark bites in California in the last 10 years, two of which were fatal, according to the International Shark Attack File.

Shark Stewards hosted a panel discussion covering great white sharks, human-shark encounters, and the latest on marine conservation and emergency safety regulations in California. There was also a special screening of Deep Blue: The World’s Biggest White Shark, a silent auction featuring ocean art from local artists, and a performance by EM The Master performing “Cold Blooded.”
