How far will a family go to ensure their daughter’s skin never darkens? This story explores colorism, using the concept of an illustrated children’s book to engage adult readers and young ones, too.

He is also the Dr. Thomas Tam Visiting Associate Professor of Asian American Studies at CUNY. His books include Across Continents: Writing Goans, Making Worlds (2026) and the edited volume Goa, Portugal, Mozambique: The Many Lives of Vamona Navelcar (2017).

#TBT 🎨 As we look back at our 75 years as a special district, we are proud to share how using art to help deliver our message has long been part of ReGen Monterey’s history.

This is especially evident in our Artist in Residence program, which is celebrating its 10th year. During #NationalArtsinEducationWeek, we’d like to thank the 23 student-artists from CSU Monterey Bay’s Visual and Public Art program who have participated in the program, helping spread our mission of “doing more to waste less” and inspiring a zero-waste culture in our community.

Stay tuned to our social media this month as we highlight our 2026 cohort and look back at some of the most stunning art created here at ReGen Monterey.

And take another look at this piece — what you’re seeing is not a photograph! It’s a salvaged door painted with a depiction of a sorting line inside our Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). Sorters are illustrated at work while real packaging recovered from the MRF travels down the conveyor line. This exceptional piece was created by Jesse Villarruel, our 2023 Artist in Residence @jessev_art

Through the program, student-artists transform materials salvaged from our facility into works of art that are later displayed at @LastChanceMercantile.

Regenmonterey.org/artist-in-residence/ has recently been updated with a catalogue of artwork from this storied program.

🌱 Happy National Wildlife Day!

Our beautiful coast is a place like no other, home to wildlife that makes the Monterey Bay region truly extraordinary.

This national wildlife day, we celebrate the animals that share our coast, the habitats that sustain them, and the people working to protect both the ocean dunes, wetlands and open spaces around us are part of what makes this region so special.

Each of us can help care for the places by respecting wildlife, keeping our coastline and continuing to learn about the natural world around us together, we can help ensure the beauty and biodiversity of the bay thrive for generations to come. 🦦🌊💙🏡🌳🐿️🦃

After 20 years professoring at my university and 30 years teaching, I’m changing it up to also teach ~half-time in the College of Education, supporting the development of children’s nature intelligence so that they come to the world of screens with powers of creativity, capability and discernment. I’m so passionate about this and grateful for the opportunity. So excited to teach future teachers! My office is newly a bit of an exploratorium… thank you to my @csumb_cahss Dean and @csumbprovost and cinematic arts department chair @grillo_camara and husband @walterryce for your support and @waltz2632 for welcoming me! Thank you to @robweisskirch for being my long-time mentor and @otterlearn for being my North Star.
