First and foremost and last but not least, I’m just a fan.

Remember this. @beatrockmusic has alwayz been and continues to be an impenetrable foundation not just for us as artists and people - not even just FilAms - but Hip Hop culture, grassroots organizing, and humanity in general.

Kuya Bam, congratulations on BASS BUILDING. You packed the damn house out in our beloved city of LA, and you did it with family. Blood and chosen. Thank you for your time, your art, and your unfiltered spirit to uplift and protect our people without ever compromising who you are. Had to pull up on you!! @bambudepistola

I originally planned to fly out just to watch like I did in 2024 for Ateh Ruby, but you’re right, we all knew that ain’t goin’ happen 🤣

Ateh Ruby, thanks for having me bless the stage once again with you. “PTI” and “Salbahe Ako” are the FilAm Hip Hop hits right now, and I’m going to run them all the way to the ground with you for as long as we possibly can. We locked in. @rubyibarra

Dreams to reality. The baby ain’t no baby no more, and we definitely held her up to hold her own on stage. The winner of the “PTI” challenge @rockyrivera @bambudepistola @rubyibarra @prometheusbrown

For those of y’all that asked if I was performing and was told “I’m just watching tonight, I’m a fan”, I was telling half the truth 🤞🏽😉

This was damn near a Beatrock and friends Anniversary concert lol

i’ll never forget what it felt like being one of only 2 or 3 filipinos in all of my k-12 experience. I used to use whitening soap everyday to lighten my skin tone, never spoke tagalog when i was on the phone around other people, and did whatever it took to blend in.

i owe everything to @csunfasa for bringing me the confidence to not just embrace my culture, but also to lead, learn and advocate for filipino-american’s everyday. proud to be filam❤️🇵🇭

Let’s talk Lineage. This deserves its own post. On Sunday, @isangmahalartskollective hosted workshops & Open Mic show @theatreoffjackson just like they did every month 30 years ago-See earlier post. Co-founders @jameslawrenceardena & Maya Santos said they were influenced by poets from Los Angeles, like #WendellPascual & #DawnMabalonIsInTheHeart, who Maya happened to meet at #FANHS 1996 Conference in NYC. Wendell organized an “Our Path to Follow” spoken word session there. At the most recent FANHS2026 conference, attendees said FANHS1996 was the 1st time they had seen spoken word & met Wen, Dawn, & Joe Montano, 3 angels now in heaven. I was part of Wen & Dawn’s spoken word poetry series from 1994-2002. That was the same time I started teaching the 1st #FilipinoAmerican Experience class @CSUNaas thanks to advocacy of @csunfasa including 1 of our 1st #AsianAmericanStudies Majors & teaching assistant, Allan Gamalinda Aquino @poetproflife. Allan was also in Our Path to Follow Crew, the Enkanto spoken word CD, @fanhslosangeles UCLA Asian Am M.A. alum & more. I was NVM Gonzalez’s student & Allan was his last when NVM returned. Flash forward to 2026: I’ve been following @carlangelomusic ever since I saw Prometheus Brown’s amazing video for Carl’s PTI Challenge. When they introduced Carl at the isangmahal show, I was fangirling, OMG, it’s Carl Angelo! After the show, Carl & his partner came up to me & said hi.
I said, I follow you & love your work.
He said, “Áte Emily, we’ve been wanting to meet you for a long time because we went to CSUN. We’re Kuya Allan’s students. He talks about you all the time. He calls you the Jedi Master!”
I said, “What? I had no idea you were Allan’s student.”
They said, “We both were.”
I said, “Oh my goodness, that means you’re like my grandchildren!” 😁
We took this photo & texted it to Allan the next day. He said it was perfect for his 1st day of classes at CSUN! I left CSUN in 2000 to teach in the midwest & Allan took over my classes. This is his Year 27. He now leads the oral history archival project for CSUN AAS. That’s Lineage. Fam. Blessed, thankful to see the lineage continues, from Uncle Fred/Auntie Dorothy/Uncle Roy/NVM on. 💜
