What Remains of Us
September to October 2026

This piece surrounds my thoughts on my own heritage and the history that comes with it. I am Black, Native, and White, but much of the history, culture, and traditions connected to my family have been lost due to America’s history.

My grandmother and her sister Ruth were the last people in my family able to practice any of our Native traditions. After them, their father wanted the family to completely assimilate into American culture, resulting in those traditions no longer being passed down after their generation.

On my Black side, I only know my family history as far back as my great grandmother Sylvia, who was married out of slavery. Anything before that, I simply don’t know. The same goes for my White ancestry. There are parts of both sides of my history that I will likely never have access to due to the situations surrounding them.

Because of that, the title What Remains of Us comes from the idea that I am left with the pieces of my history that survived.

The brown glass throughout both sides represents my skin. The red squares represent blood. The purple diamonds represent the soul.

The red panel represents my frustration and anger towards everything that happened before me and the history I had no control over. The blue panel represents sadness, but leans more towards acceptance and calmness. I cannot change what happened or get back everything that was lost, but I can accept what remains, keep my head up, and move forward with what I have.

People always told me how crazy packed but organized my studio was. I didn’t think so, but it’s taken me three trips to clear the space out. Last night I finally got down to walls and it’s crazy to think how right everyone was. I haven’t see this space empty since I claimed it three years ago, and it took looking at my “first day” picture to truly understand it.

Going back to school for my Master’s has not only been beneficial for my art but also my mind. My mind has been expounded upon and I now have a firm foundation of my next ventures in my practice.
Thank you to my family, my fiancé, the faculty of the Visual Arts Department and my hardworking and talented cohort(MA and MFA peeps).

My thesis solo exhibition will showcase paintings from the past three years in my masters program at CSUSB. So thankful for all the support I’ve had from my wonderful mentors and cohort. My art has significantly grown in the past three years and I can’t wait to celebrate this with you all.

The Lighthouse, 2026
Photo print and video screen on acrylic and wooden box.

Playing around with this photo+video format that has gone through a few iterations within the last couple of years of my @csusbgradart MFA program. Thinking about visuals in storytelling and how the simple can impact someone on a personal level. I’ve juggled various concepts and narratives to dive into a bigger series and I think I’m closer to something fun and worth hammering out.

I completed this piece shortly after my Thesis exhibition, and gifted to a friend made during my time at @csusb who I witnessed make such great photo work. Shoutout to @roni_nelson for being such a creative force.

A quick recap of our weekend adventure out in Zzyzx near Baker, CA. The pics are a collab from all the MFA students who went on the trip. We managed to have a ton of fun during the heatwave, and honestly surprised no one had a heatstroke! We did all complain about the heat every couple of minutes or so, but it was well worth it. 🫡
