A lot of the day was spent sitting in the dark, eating leftover bbq, waiting for the rain to stop. When we could finally wander around outside, we realized how lucky we had actually been. Giant trees had fallen all up and down the street, blocking the roads, crushing neighbors’ roofs, taking out power lines. Several had landed just feet away from TG’s house, but didn’t hit us. Our production vehicles were water logged and a little beat up, but still intact and functional. For the most part we were still cut off from the rest of the world, and still trying to wrap our brains around what had happened. The house was very quiet and somber, a drastic contrast to the party atmosphere the night before. Some of you noticed actor Bryan James Kitto in previous posts about our Katrina caravan. His mother, Julia, decided to join us on this adventure, although I’m sure she had many other options. Part of me thinks she felt it might be less stressful for Bryan to stay with his new found friends and movie family in such a traumatic time. Another part of me thinks she saw this large group of tourist from around the world who had expertise in all aspects of filmmaking but absolutely no idea what they were in for facing the possibility of a hurricane, and needed some adult supervision! Whatever her reasoning, I was thankful they were there. Everyone, really. I couldn’t imagine surviving a natural disaster with any other group of people! #labou #labouthemovie #filmmaking

Hurricane Katrina drop a few categories by the time it hit us, but you wouldn’t know it if you were in that house with us during the storm. The wind and rain hammered the roof, we lost power and land lines, no reception on cell phones, trees were flying past the windows. I remember hearing people crying in some of the rooms. It was so dark in the house it was hard to move around. Of course @csviolette came prepared, being the trained SPD cadet he is. #labou #labouthemovie #filmmaking

It was decided that all of the “out of towners” and any other cast and crew that needed someplace to go would travel by caravan out of New Orleans on the morning of Sunday, August 28th. Executive Producer TG Solomon owned a home in McComb, Mississippi, about 100 miles north of NOLA, and wanted to bring us all there. Everyone met at a local diner near the production offices for breakfast. The sun was still out and everyone was in good spirits. After we eat, we split into teams, some prepping the production vehicles, like the wardrobe/makeup trailer, the production trailer, and the stake bed, and others went grocery shopping and loaded cars with supplies. @godzillag33k and I, with a few PAs, went to the studio and made sure all our gear, puppets, and paperwork were secure. #labou #labouthemovie #filmmaking

I was awoken by another phone call, telling me that there was going to be a cast and crew meeting to decide if we were going to hunker down and wait for the storm to pass, or if we were going to evacuate the city as a production. Executive TG wanted to hear what we all had to say, so in typical TG fashion, he chose the meeting place, and famous New Orleans restaurant called “The Steak Knife”! He invited the entire #labouthemovie team for dinner and discussion about the pending hurricane. It was a very surreal experience, great food, good company, @kbrooster had just finished a @labou plushy prototype prop for an upcoming scene and everybody was hugging it and smiling, yet there was all this doom and gloom talk about the possibility of not surviving the storm. A large portion of the local crew didn’t join the dinner, as they had already left town or were boarding up their houses. Everyone in attendance gave their opinion, and we seemed to be leaning toward staying, in hopes the storm wouldn’t be as bad as feared and we could get right back to filming on Monday. As of this moment, on Saturday night, there was no rain. I personally wanted to stay, afraid that moving the entire company to some distant location would just deepen the hole we were already sinking into. I was in the middle of pitching that take to the crew when I felt hands land on my shoulders. I turned to find Mayor Ray Nagin behind me, surveying our packed private room. “What are you all doing here!?! You need to leave town right away!” He told us he had come to the restaurant for one last meal with his family before evacuating them outside the hurricane zone. He heard we were here deciding what to do, and essentially ordered us to evacuate. I told him I thought we could ride it out, and he said if we were still here in the morning he would personally put us on a bus! #filmmaking

@officialpowermorphicon Day 2 - Part One!

There were far too many incredible moments from Day 2 to fit into one post, so we’re doing this in two parts!

@alysonkipermansullivan character Taylor from #PowerRangersWildForce, was one of my favorite Rangers growing up, so meeting the woman who brought her to life was an incredibly special moment for me. I was also honored and proud to have the opportunity to sponsor Alyson’s for this event. Thank you for everything! You were so kind and thoughtful!

Meeting the other Rangers was another major highlight of the day! There were a lot of good conversations and new friendships that came from it.

Stay tuned for Part Two!

The “ship wreck” was comprised of the exterior cabin wall we used out at the plantation, now attached to the cabin walls we constructed on the angled riser I posted about earlier this year. The louvered doors were opened, and distressed, to reveal the lost treasure inside. The space between the cabin and the wall of Deadman’s Knoll was almost the length of the soundstage, and was filled with a few sections of deck, the mast from the plantation shoot, now broken and distressed, the ship’s wheel, the railings, ropes, and rigging, as well as the the full size masthead sculpture. All this got dressed in with vines and leaves, and any major gaps got a camo net thrown over it! Because the ghost ship was “lit” by fireflies, it was a very focused, low light situation, so it allowed us to take a lot of liberties and broad strokes with the set dressing. The ship’s wheel was very popular, I don’t think there was a single person who walked through the set that didn’t pretend to steer the ship! #labou #labouthemovie #filmmaking
