Laura G. with a stunning 21 3/4” brown while being guided by Zach St. Amand over this past weekend. New River Report is up, click the website link on our Bio Page.

Hard to beat catching beautiful brown trout in fall foliage. Hardy Day this Saturday 10/24 from 11am-3pm. Nice weather this week, no rain, days in the mid 50’s to mid 60’s with cold nights. Main Hatches are tan/brown Caddis & small Blue Winged Olives (BWO). Small nymphs & Junk Flies are producing subsurface. Fall is definitely “streamer season” as brown trout get more aggressive due to the spawn. Spawning hasn’t truly kicked off yet, but I imagine it’ll get going sometime over the next week now that the weather is cooler. -Torrey. #upcountrysportfishing #farmingtonriver #dryflies #euronymphing #browntrout

Local guide Derrick Kirkpatrick with a beautiful 21” brown he caught on a small nymph last week. New River Report is up, click the website link on our Bio page.

It’s getting prettier & more colorful every day here, we’re about one week away from the absolute peak. The next few weekends should be beautiful. Trout will be beginning to spawn soon, so keep an eye out for redds, the light colored oval patches in the gravel where they deposit their eggs. These are typically in the gravelly tails of pools and side channels, but can also be in the heads of pools where there is suitable small gravel. This activity also makes brown trout more aggressive, which can make streamers a good choice. Small nymphs are steady producers, and when bugs are on the water, you should see some rising trout, especially later in the day. Make sure to click on the link for the River Report so you know what’s hatching and you don’t miss out on the latest tips. -Torrey. #upcountrysportfishing #farmingtonriver #dryflies #euronymphing #browntrout

Derrick’s (CT Fish Guides) client Shanna with one of several large brown trout she landed this past weekend while working on her tight lining. New River Report is up, click the website link on our Bio page.

October is here, and the foliage is starting to pop. Not peak yet, but it’s getting darn pretty out there. The major hatches in October are tan/brown Caddis size 16-18, Isonychia size 10-14, and Blue Winged Olives size 18-24. There are also various other bugs at moments- make sure to click on the River Rport link for very detailed information. It’s definitely streamer time, and in the fall you can fish some bigger ones to appeal to their aggression from the impending spawn later this month. Nymphing is consistent, focus mostly on smaller patterns size 18-22. -Torrey. #upcountrysportfishing #farmingtonriver #dryflies #euronymphing #streamerfishing

Check out this trophy rainbow that local guide Dave Machowski landed when we were fishing together yesterday- I have a scale built into my landing net and it weighed between 4.75-5 pounds and taped at 21”, a very fat fish. Caught in fast water on a size 20 nymph, 6x Cortland fluoro tippet. New River Report is up, click the website link on our Bio page. After a flow cut Monday so they could do some fisheries work on Tuesday, flows are back to normal and running a beautiful 230 CFS in the permanent TMA/catch & release. Riverton water temps have been in the low 50s, and a New Hartford water temps have been running between mid 50s and low 60s. This means you can fish the river from the dam all the way down to Canton and you won’t have to worry about needing to migrate upstream to find cold water in the afternoons because it’s plenty cold already. Make sure you have some small flying ants with you, there were tons of them on the water in the evening yesterday. -Torrey. #upcountrysportfishing #farmingtonriver #flyingants #dryflies #euronymphing

Zach St. Amand’s son caught this beautiful Farmington River brown trout yesterday. New River Report is up, click the website link on our Bio page. Two pieces of good news: 1) after the heavy rain earlier this week flows are back down and cleared up, and 2) Trico’s are hatching in the mornings, at least as far upstream as the Campground already. The main event during the morning Trico hatches is the spinner fall, which is triggered by air temps of approximately 68°. Trico’s average a size 24. The water is still coming out of the dam nice & cold in the 40s, but it does warm as you go downstream, and the Still River is contributing some warm water right now, so use a thermometer to keep an eye on water temps. In the mornings, you’re generally fine as far downstream as New Hartford and maybe even Canton, but typically in the afternoons you’re going to have to move upstream to stay in cold water. Look for water under 68°, and preferably 65° or less. -Torrey.

Derrick‘s client Mark M. with 20” of Farmington River brown trout. New River Report is up, click the website link on our Bio page. The rain of the past few days is all done, we received just over 3”. Flow below the Still River is currently medium-high & dropping at just under 600 CFS total flow. Riverton is a low 126 CFS above the Still River, and the Still is adding in 467 CFS and dropping as I write this Thursday afternoon. I’d expect the total flow to be down closer to 400 CFS by Saturday morning, quite possibly even in the 300s, and even lower on Sunday. Today and Friday would be good days to throw medium to large streamers below the Still River and target big trout in the off-color water. The Still drops & clears fast, so we should be sitting pretty on Saturday & Sunday. Water temps the past few days have ranged anywhere from about 46° to 64°, depending on where & when you take the temperature in the New Hartford to Riverton section. I think we can confidently say the drought that was going on in May & June is now over and we are in very good shape. Good chance you’ll see them bump the dam release up to 200-250 CFS on Monday morning- the reservoir levels are excellent, we’ve had a lot of rain in July with more to come, and this rain will drastically increase the inflow to the reservoir. All good things. We still have copies of Steve Culton‘s new book “Fly Fishing Guide to the Farmington River”. -Torrey.

This is the time of year when if you don't know exactly what you are doing you will probably have little to no success with even the fresh stocked fish. Message me asap and I can show you how to hunt the wild brown trout of the Farmington River with dry flies. It takes a lot of patience and observation before you even make a cast but when you do it better be the right one. Let me show you the way...

Derrick‘s client Carver with a 20” plus holdover FRAA rainbow that was stocked in April 2025. New river report is up, click the website link below. We will have a sale table set up out front this weekend with various used tackle & sale items. The main hatches remain Sulfurs & Caddis, although there are plenty other bugs in the mix. Flow is low, but still very fishable after the flow cut Monday morning, they’re trying to conserve water due to fears of another drought this summer/fall. Water coming out of the dam is still icy cold in the mid 40s and gradually warming as you go downstream. If you’re fishing as far down as Collinsville & Unionville or below, I suggest taking a water temp, but you’re certainly fine all the way down through New Hartford & Canton. Looks for water temps 68° or below, with 50 to 65° being optimal. Primetime for dry flies is still evenings, although anytime you have bugs hatching in the morning or afternoon you may find fish rising. With the low water, be stealthy, consider using longer leaders, longer & lighter tippets, and dress in drab colored clothing. Don’t sleep on knee-deep riffle water, you’d be surprised how shallow good fish will hold when flows are down. -Torrey. #upcountrysportfishing #farmingtonriver #dryflies #euronymphing #browntrout
