“Pearls”, from the LP Classics Vol. 1, grew out of a collaboration between GRAMMY winners Latroit and Soweto Gospel Choir during the making of Groove Terminator’s 2024 ARIA-nominated album History of House (Best World Music Album)

During the project, LATROIT co-founded a cultural exchange initiative with Cape Town Electronic Music Festival founder Ivan Turanjanin, and Mbongisani oBhekokuhle from the Johannesburg Chamber of Commerce Youth Commission, which led to the introduction to South African vocalist and human rights advocate Nomvula Munnie.

The recording of Pearls brings the cultural exchange full circle.

Its isiZulu-language vocal performance transforms the song’s emotional message into a communal offering, delivered by one of the world’s most celebrated gospel choirs alongside Nomvula’s deeply expressive lead vocal. Blending gospel, house and Amapiano, the recording connects traditional and contemporary South African musical traditions.

beautiful little story behind this release. in 2020 @ctemf set out to put together a compilation called friends & frequencies to help raise funds for an initiative called feed my crew which was trying to help freelancers in the creative sector survive the depths of lockdown. i decided to go through my phone and see which friends would be willing to contribute a song. the lovely @gerdjansonofficial was really keen on remixing something local. so after a little back and forth i managed to get permission from the legendary @don.laka and this edit was born. fast forward to 2025 i run into gerd at the @lhfofficial and he says how about we chat to @prinsthomas get the permission for his edit and put together a 12” for running back. with a little bit of luck and a lot of love from running back and don laka himself the release finally landed in south africa. i’ve said it before and i’ll keep saying it, there really is magic in music 🪄

To understand the weight of @jeff_mills_official’s presence in Cape Town is to understand his role in shaping the language of techno itself. The pioneering composer, DJ, and producer delivered a triumphant two act set to an awestruck dance-floor full of Cape Town’s club kids, DJs, producers, and the broader electronic music community, celebrating 30 years of his legendary ‘Live at the Liquid Room’ recording.

We want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this night possible as we hosted an icon of our time here in Johannesburg - Jeff Mills, as part of his Live at the Liquid Room 30th Anniversary world tour.

To the local artists who stepped up and delivered, reminding us how important each voice is in shaping the scene.

To everyone behind the scenes and everyone who showed up, supported, and contributed in any way, we appreciate it more than you know.

And to Jeff’s team, thank you for the trust, the support, and for working so closely with us and our partners @ctemf throughout.

A special moment for Johannesburg.

With love

Today's no Sacred tracks is a live Remix of the classsic @jeff_mills_official The Bells - In honour of the Live at the Liquid room tour. Tonight I get to experience it @undergroundafrica and Cpt tomorrow you get it @ctemf

Note it has a slow start as it's a minimal track and I was thinkign through how to build it up, when it gets to half way its relly going :) also you really start to hear the sounds ;) note I created new midi for it and used simialr sounds, not the exact same sounds.

I challenge other live artists to do the same. @askalotl_ @thorrixon @sides_official @colinbenders perhaps give it a try. @agent_orange_dj did a sick one recentlyish.

hiiiiiii 😙 so tomorrow I have the absolute honour of closing for Jeff mills with @avi_subban_ … pinch me!!!! a huge, huge thank you to @undergroundafrica @ctemf for having me!

I am so excited to be able to witness, experience and support a source of inspiration for so, so many people across decades and continents. To me, Jeff Mills & this 30 year anniversary are a striking reminder of how far we have come and how far we can still go. He shows the power of being uncompromising, being imaginative and EXCITED! Having integrity, values and morals, being willing to create what you wish to see, and not settling for less. Unreservedly, he is skilled, innovative and creative to a T, but what really strikes me is his presence of mind and approach to music & creativity overall.

On a personal level, while I don’t centralise it, being black, female, and queer, and playing techno, an extremely male-dominated genre? It’s not the easiest experience, to say the least. But supporting someone of this calibre, who didn’t and hasn’t allowed imposed narratives and agendas to limit his creative expression is an unbelievable, irreplaceable gift.

I am so grateful to be alongside talented and respected local artists who I have been looking up to for years, provided an opportunity I could have never imagined. Even more-so, I’m extremely, immensely grateful to everyone who has made this dream possible. Music is my soul, my passion, my everything. I wouldn’t be here without you, so thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!🥺🥹🥹🥹

Make sure to get enough rest, eat a nutritious meal and do a warm up stretch. It’s that deep!! Can’t wait to dance the night away and celebrate the music we love so deeply — arrive early, stay late!!!!!! 🥹🖤
