Goodbye Venty.

This Tuesday SUAS@STEM’s first-generation aircraft Event Horizon-4, nicknamed Venty, conducted her last flight here at SUAS Internats in Oklahoma.

We were shocked and disheartened to see her drop nearly 200 feet onto the airfield. After spending the past few days on the field with all the other teams and making it through safety inspection, we were devastated to see the flight end this way.

In our post-flight analysis, we have determined that our aircraft experienced an estimated 40 mph gust at altitude, which destabilized our flight controller past its safety tilt threshold and triggered an automatic failsafe shutoff of the motors, preventing a potential runaway flight.

Rest in peace, Venty. You’ll always be missed, and we’ll remember the countless hours and late nights that made you what you were.

Our respect to all the other valiant aircraft that braved the skies this week.

And our best to the teams from Australia @monash.uas, New York @cuairmae, Thailand @alltimehighcrma, India @suas.iitm, Missouri @sandt_multirotor. We’re honored to have shared the flight line with all of you.

Venty’s flight may be over, but ours isn’t. See you all back on the flight line next year, October 1st.

All roads lead to the Flight Line. ✈️ The journey started long before this drive. 🏎️ Months of preparation and hard work go into each team’s attempt at the competition’s tasks. Good luck, teams!
