Congratulations to Sean Leeman on his thesis film THE EXCHANGE RATE winning the Outstanding Achievement Award in Sound Editing at Indie Short Fest Los Angeles! Sean was also recognized with a nomination for Best Student Male Director at the festival, celebrating his creative vision and leadership behind the film.

The Sound Editing award recognizes the exceptional sound design collaboration between Sean and sound editor/mixer Eli Schmadel, whose work creates an immersive experience for audiences. “The world of The Exchange Rate is loud, frantic, and anxiety-inducing,” says Eli. “Sean and I challenged ourselves to make sure that every single sound you hear draws you even further into the headspace of these characters without becoming background noise.”

Proud to see the exceptional storytelling and technical artistry of our students receiving recognition on the festival circuit. Congratulations, Sean and Eli!

IDIWS Sneak Peek: THE EXCHANGE RATE by Sean Leeman. After a bank heist, two criminals try to escape the law, sparking a chain of emotional, financial, and romantic fallouts that forces three different stories to collide in unexpected ways.

“I wanted to make The Exchange Rate because I was really drawn to the idea of telling a story through an anthology format. For a short film, that structure felt unexpected and fresh and it allowed me to explore multiple perspectives and situations instead of being confined to a single narrative,” shares director/cinematographer Sean. “One of the biggest takeaways from making the film was just how challenging filming on location can be, especially in a place like downtown Tucson. It’s such a lively, unpredictable environment, which is great visually, but it comes with constant noise and interruptions ... One of the things I’ve learned in the FTV program is that filmmaking is really about problem-solving and working with other people, not just having a good idea. Things don’t go as planned, so you have to adjust and figure things out as you go.”
