#DoingItRight
#Graphics for the @techdeck Archive are selected in the highest possible format directly from the catalogs.

When this project began I quickly realized I have put together hundreds of extremely large and high quality scans of every major skate catalog for the last 33 years.

Big shout out to all of the #Artists who have made any type of contribution(s) over the years.

Folks ask me all the time what motivates me to spend this amount of time, detail, and attention to this project. It is NOT about the money [Clearly, as I am well aware of the value of organic structured, relational, and machine training data].

It's the Art that brings a sense of peace and serenity into an otherwise chaotic landscape.

Thank you again to all the artist, creators, and innovators.

A few clips from the new episode of @letitkillyouseries for @vice ⚡️

I grew up watching skaters like Spanky, Andrew Reynolds, BA, Heath - heroes that were pushing the limits of skateboarding to the nth degree at the turn of the century. I’d geek out on whatever new video @tyevans had made, watching them over and over. I do the same with @danielwheatley’s work now.

To this day, their creativity, ingenuity & persistence in finding new ways to reinvent & push skateboarding all while decades into incredible careers still has the power to inspire in so many ways - whether that’s in skateboarding itself, in music, in filmmaking or any other creative pursuit.

It’s a privilege to have my track ‘Brutes’ featured in this section of ‘Let It Kill You’, lending some support to the words of these people that I have long admired & helping to describe the monumental impact @epiclylaterd has had on the world of skateboarding. 💚

You can find the full episode on @vice YouTube channel.

Unpublished 1996:

The UCSD MFA program brought me to San Diego for avant-cinema in 1995. I had gone straight from preschool to grad school without a break, so when I got to San Diego, all I wanted to do was ride bikes and shoot what I wanted. As part of my work-study scholarship, I taught the intro photography lab at UCSD, and Gideon Choi was one of my students. He got me out to some spots, and I was able to hand tapes straight out of the camera to some incredible skaters like Dave Mayhew, Willy Santos, and Gideon, to name a few.

I had moved to San Diego with an Arriflex BL 16mm camera, and since the school had black-and-white processing, I tried to get clips with this tank of a camera. On April 1, 1996, I ran into Atiba shooting video of Heath Kirchart and asked if I could shadow. With his approval, I shot Heath on a long lens, working on this tre over the rail to bank. I was so cheap with film that I wouldn't let the camera get fully up to speed, stopping just past the white flash used to sync audio. It created a feeling.

I cut together an edit and brought a VHS tape to Grant and Atiba at Transworld a few weeks later. I ended up leaving San Diego about a month after that, so I never followed up, but about a decade later, I noticed that tape may have had some influence on Transworld's 1997 release Cinematographer. Then, a few years ago, a group of skaters on a bike tour from San Francisco to Los Angeles stopped by MASH, and there was Heath. I found this old edit and AirDropped it to him. It was really special to finally share it with him almost 30 years later.

Thanks for the inspiration, Mike.
