A Modern Take on Early Music…Introducing the #CumberlandBaroqueProject

The Cumberland Baroque Project is a new collaboration between the Music and Theatre Department at @cumberlandu and @earlymusiccity . Designed as a biennial event for the fall semester, the CBP aims to bring high quality historical performance to the Cumberland University campus and greater community while expanding the experience of the institution’s student performers to Nashville audiences.

Highlights of the Cumberland Baroque Project include collaborative music rehearsals between Cumberland musicians and the players of Early Music City and a vocal masterclass with renowned soprano Dr. Mary Wilson @marymusicmama (Professor of Voice, University of Memphis). Our inaugural project will culminate with an innovative and explorative performance entitled “Dissonance and Devotion: A Concert Experience featuring Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater”.

It is our hope that the Cumberland Baroque Project will provide unique artistic opportunities to the Cumberland University students while offering world-class performances with internationally acclaimed artists to rural Middle Tennessee.

2026 Schedule
October 27:
12:30-1:45 PM - Vocal Masterclass with Mary Wilson, soprano, Professor of Voice at the University of Memphis
Baird Chapel

October 28:
7 PM - Dissonance and Devotion: A Concert Experience featuring Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater

Another acceptance letter… another reason for a mama happy dance!

Austin has been accepted to CUMBERLAND UNIVERSITY, and he is SO excited! Apparently, senior year comes with a lot of feelings—and an expanding college sweatshirt wish list.

God, thank You for this opportunity, for carrying him through the hard days, and for giving him so much to look forward to. We’re celebrating and praying that You guide his steps as he considers what’s next.

Keep going, son! Keep working hard, enjoying these moments, and keeping God at the center. We love getting to cheer you on!

The Cumberland English department was honored to bring C.I. Aki to campus as a poet-in-residence for a whole day of pouring inspiration and encouragement into our students!

Aki is a poet, essayist, novelist, editor, filmmaker, gardener, and educator in Nashville, Tennessee. He studied rhetoric and sociology at University of Texas at Austin and completed his graduate work in philosophy and theology at Vanderbilt Divinity School.

Aki teaches American Literature at Montgomery Bell Academy and hosts creative writing workshops on Realism in literary fiction for The Porch Writers Collective. His work has appeared in The Denver Quarterly, The Nashville Scene, Waxing and Waning, Novus Literary Arts Journal, Biocoastal Review, and is forthcoming in The Carolina Quarterly. His debut poetry collection, The World Black, Beautiful, and Beast (April Gloaming Publishing, 2021), was ranked #3 on Readers Digest’s “Top 14 Black Poets to Read in 2021.” His sophomore collection, Will You Find Me a Black Peony? will be released February of next year. Aki’s work centers around the challenges of identity and place in the life of a second-generation Nigerian American.

Thank you to Prof. Sandee Gertz, the C. William McKee Research and Creative Activities Grant, and the Novus Literary Arts Journal for making this unforgettable day possible!

Novus Lit Club and Novus Literary Arts Journal are thrilled to welcome poet and fiction writer, C.I. Aki, author of The World Black, Beautiful, and Beast, to Cumberland University as our 10th Poet in Residence. This has become a time-honored tradition to bring the best of contemporary poetry and poets to our campus and classrooms, and we couldn’t be more excited for this semester’s choice. @soul_lit_writer

Named “One of 14 Black Poets You Need to Know” by Reader’s Digest and published in numerous journals and publications (including Novus!) C.I. is not only an author but an established educator, philosopher, Vanderbilt Divinity scholar, and gardener. He specializes in poetry which explores his Nigerian American identity and celebrates the subtle beauty of literary fiction (ahem, we clear our throats and HOWL a heck YES!) in his own work and in workshops for the Nashville Porch Writers Collective. Professor Gertz’s Poetry classes are currently reading from his collection and finding it to provide amazing and deep discussion. We are eager to see his new collection be published soon as well. If you are near the Cumberland campus, please come out to his reading at 2pm in the Vise Library and stay for his Lit Club chat to follow. (See Professor Gertz if you’d like to sit in on his 11:00am class with her CW256/406 students.)

Welcome C.I.! This Tuesday!
