This Halloween, 26 incredible horror and thriller authors from across the country are coming together for FearLit, and they’re just as excited about it as we are. Hear it from the authors themselves.

Meet the minds behind your favorite nightmares. Hear the stories behind the stories. Get your books signed. Discover your next favorite author. And spend an afternoon surrounded by people who love the same wonderfully twisted books you do.

What makes this especially meaningful? FearLit wasn’t created by some massive convention company. It was built by Thrillerdelphia, Philadelphia’s first horror bookstore, as we celebrate our very first anniversary.

One little independent bookstore. 26 authors. An entire community brought together by a love of books.

Laura Piper Lee is a new to me author who I found exactly when I needed her most. I read both Doomsdate and pot shot back to back the beginning of this month because I couldn’t put them down and didn’t want to stop reading her whitty and funny books. Doomsdate is by far my favorite book of the year and probably my favorite I’ve read the past few years if I’m being honest. I’m such a huge zombie nerd(peep the username) and this was everything I wanted in a zombie book and more and when I pitched it to my mom she was hoping they would adapt it because of how incredible a concept it is. She blended so much humor into a world that was scary at times but also delved into grief and trauma that the characters didn’t feel like they were characters in a book but real people who could have been talking with me about their life. Truly phenomenal. And also love a book that unapologetically calls out certain people 🍊 and use a zombie story to act as a rebellion to the bullshit we have going on right now. Bow down to you and the private toilet scene Laura 🙇🏻‍♀️

Pot shot was a harder read for me but I ended up reading it in half the time as Doomsdate. As someone with chronic illness and disability I get nervous reading books that focus so heavily on it because I try so hard to take a time out of my life and this challenged that idea for me because it was exactly what I needed. The main character has Crohn’s disease (so does the author) and how when western medicine did nothing but make her more ill because her body couldn’t handle the normal approach’s she had to turn to weed which gave her more relief than she has had in years which is why she wanted to open op a holistic dispensary to help others. The book works to dismantle stigma around cannabis usage and explores some of the different medical conditions that see noticeable improvement, as well as still showing how it can be fun in a protein ball 🤣. I sobbed by the end because of this passage I need to quote here “ there are two main stages in Crohn’s disease- being sick or fear of being sick- and they’re both disruptive to living my life.” It goes on to explain the secret thir

She is a great undiscovered writer who blends cultures and exposes readers here to new cultures and experiences. Her writing will satisfy your quest for spice while balancing it with good story line and likeable intresting characters. There is no one you can compare her to, she is original. I am reading Husband Sitter now and it is very good. Well written with the spice some of you crave. Check out her books on Kindle. Give her a try and send her a note saying Bigdaddyreader sent you!

PENNSYLVANIA! What a weekend!

Thank you to everyone who braved the oncoming rainstorm Friday to hang out with me and longtime writing bestie @laurapiperlee at @cupidsbookshop! Laura and her scroll o’questions kept me from shouting out her books as much as I’d intended to, but if you haven’t picked up POT SHOT or DOOMSDATE, get on that!!

The @parenfaire on Saturday set the record for the coldest I’ve ever been at a faire. Thank GOD I packed my hand-knit shawl at the last minute. The Coin of the Realm was a first for me--very cool alternative to ATM lines! The grounds were gorgeous … so many amazing artisans and performers, and cinnamon bread to die for!

I planned this particular tour stop so I could catch @mornyngknight’s show, and I’m so glad I did. Come for the fire-eating, stay for the firesword finale! I stayed after to say hi and promptly babbled all over them (dumbass things I said: “I’m so cold” and “I’m so sorry that the books I write are straight”) but they couldn’t have been more gracious and kind.

If that wasn’t enough bi-panic for one day, THEN I saw @tinygirlbigshow, whom I’d missed when the New York faire had been rained out. Stahr and @eccothebard are so funny and so so talented: The music! The knife juggling! The FIRE juggling! I fangirled and word-vomited all over her as well, and chickened out of asking for a photo, but she was so sweet!

I left inspired. In a time of AI, Stahr encouraged us to experience LIFE, and the magical, REAL things that are part of it. And Mornyng (can I call you Mornyng?) spoke about facing your fears and being enough … gorgeous words I wished I’d gotten on video. I never take enough photos of these weekends, but I’ve been spending more time enjoying moments for what they are and less time looking at those moments through my phone camera. Bad for the ‘gram, but better for my mental health.

All in all, yet another fantastic weekend of book tour/ren faire tour! I’m home for a few weeks, and then we’re heading to Texas, y’all! I can’t wait!

I’ll leave you with these final words of Philly wisdom from Friday night: “Gritty is poly. Gritty is pan. Gritty is cuck.”

I had a lovely time celebrating WELL VERSED, the latest and last installment of the Well Met series, @cupidsbookshop with the author herself @jendelucawrites and the ever funny @laurapiperlee! They even gave us all flower crowns! 💐

WELL MET, the first book, was my first adult romance ever, so it was a huge "pinch me!" moment to meet Jen and let her know. The ren faire has always been a big part of my life, so her books were the perfect beginning for this romance reader. 🩷
