Manual vs. Electric Toothbrushes: Does It Really Matter?
You don’t NEED an electric toothbrush to achieve a healthy smile! A manual toothbrush can be just as effective at maintaining good oral hygiene when used with the proper technique and consistency. 🦷

The secret? It’s all about the ANGLE + PRESSURE + TIME

Here’s how to brush effectively with a manual toothbrush:
✔️ The 45° Rule: Position your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle toward the gum line.
✔️ Small, Gentle Movements: Use short, circular motions rather than aggressive horizontal scrubbing.
✔️ 2 Minutes, Twice Daily: All surfaces
✔️ Less Pressure = Better: Brushing harder doesn’t mean brushing better!
✔️ Replace Every 3–4 Months

I’ve included four options that I particularly like for their different bristle designs and features. Some of my favourite manual toothbrushes:

🪥 Curaprox CS 5460 – @curaprox.canada @oral.science One of my favourites for its densely packed, ultra-soft bristles and compact head, making it a great option for gentle, controlled brushing along the gumline.

🪥 SuperMouth – @mysupermouth I love its unique contoured bristle design, which is intended to adapt to tooth surfaces.

🪥 CUREEND NANO – @getcureend Known for its exceptionally dense, ultra-fine bristles and cushion-like feel, making it an interesting option for those who prefer a very soft brushing experience.

🪥 Oral-B Extra Soft – @oralb A simple, accessible everyday option with soft bristles for effective brushing when paired with proper technique.

There’s no point beating a dead horse. 😅

If I’ve recommended floss appointment after appointment and you’re still not using it, at some point I need to stop repeating the same recommendation and find something that actually works for YOU.

And hygienists — we need to catch this pattern too.

If we’ve made the same recommendation two, three, four appointments in a row and nothing has changed, that’s our cue to pivot.

The goal isn’t compliance with one specific tool. The goal is effective interdental cleaning with something our patient will realistically use.

Enter: interdental brushes.

For the right spaces, they can be an incredibly effective alternative to floss, physically disrupting plaque where your toothbrush can’t reach.

Sizing matters. They should make contact without being forced through, and different spaces may need different sizes.

Does that mean everyone should throw away their floss? Nope. Tight contacts may still be better suited to floss.

Patients: if flossing repeatedly isn’t happening, tell us why.

Hygienists: if the same recommendation repeatedly isn’t working, modify the recommendation.

The goal isn’t to turn everyone into a flosser.

The goal is to get the in-betweens of their teeth clean. 🦷
