Management said if I put my face on here you’d actually see this post.

I had the great pleasure of writing a piece about a weird and sort of painful chapter in my life for @cuspermag Issue 3, now available on their website and in the following Los Angeles bookstores:

@skylightbooks (annex)
@thepophop
@northfigbookshop
@storiesbooksandcafe
Please enjoy.

The LA I love drinks pre-batched Old Fashioneds at a release party for an indie literary magazine. It huddles under heat lamps (even though it’s only 55 degrees) and tries to surreptitiously smoke its pre-roll. It knows the Editor in Chief, or one of the writers, or no one in particular but just appreciates the idea that words, when placed in the proper order, can open up the world, or just one person. It gets fake tattoos in the lobby. It stands in line for the one restroom available, because the LA I love can’t always afford to rent out event venues with better plumbing. It’s always tired, but it’s always there when it matters. Or when there’s drinks.

Thrilled to be a part of @cuspermag Issue 3—and many thanks to @somanydaysofsummer @maxbenowitz and @coolhandlucas_ for giving this piece a home. “Some Strange Catalyst” is about hand-me-down high school cars, suburban hometowns, inheritance, and the ends of eras—what we lose when an object is lost.

“Barefoot in the Snow” is a personal essay I’ve been wanting to write for a very long time. The writing of this piece coincided with my reading of an incredible book called “Devil’s Gate” by David Roberts, which details the brutal history of the Mormon pioneer migration. Some of the passages in my piece are borrowed directly from real pioneer journals as detailed in that book. As I read this and worked on my essay I was really coming to reconcile the story I had been told by the church growing up—that the suffering of the pioneers was evidence of their faith and the truthfulness of the church’s doctrines—and the reality of what had happened to my ancestors, who were impoverished, whipped into submission, strategically starved and pushed across the plains in an effort to save the church a few bucks. I have really come to respect my teenage self for her wisdom and ability to see through the bullshit (buffalo chips?) before she even really understood what was inside the bullshit.
I am really grateful to @cuspermag for editing and publishing this earlier this year, and giving me the confidence to share my truth. Visit their page to support indie lit magazines!

If you are a Mormon experiencing a faith crisis, or an ex-Mormon looking for community and secular spirituality tools, I would love to be a resource for you.
