Want to see bison in Custer State Park? Late September might be a very good time to go. 🦬

We accidentally timed our Custer State Park bison viewing REALLY well.

We visited about a week before the annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup, when roundup preparations were already underway, and we found a huge number of bison hanging around the Bison Center side of the park.

And I mean… a LOT of bison.

Big herds. Bison beside the road. Bison beside the car. Bison grunting their unsolicited commentary at us. Plus a few burros, bighorn sheep and pronghorn who apparently wanted screen time too.

Of course, wildlife is wildlife, so there are never guarantees about exactly where the herd will be. But if seeing bison in Custer State Park is high on your South Dakota wish list, I would absolutely put the week or two leading up to the Buffalo Roundup on your radar.

You get some of the excitement of roundup season without actually visiting on roundup day.

And, apparently, the soundtrack is included. 😂

We hiked Cathedral Spires expecting the views. Instead, the fog swallowed almost everything. 🌫️

The granite spires kept disappearing into the clouds, visibility was basically nonexistent, and the whole trail felt quiet, misty and slightly otherworldly.

And somehow, I don’t feel like we missed out at all.

The fog turned what should have been a big-view hike into something completely different. Moody forest, granite appearing and disappearing through the mist, and a very strong Twilight energy the entire way.

We kept waiting for the clouds to lift and eventually realized we didn’t really care if they did.

0/10 visibility. 10/10 atmosphere. Would hike it exactly like this again.

A little fresh air and a lot of scenery. Hiking around Sylvan Lake was a highlight of my long weekend in Rapid City. Blue skies, granite peaks, and beautiful views around every turn. 🌲☀️

Finally seeing this in person after a lifetime of seeing it in pictures. Pretty damn incredible standing beneath it. Another highlight from my long weekend in the Black Hills. 🇺🇸🤘

Mandatory guitar store stop. Because apparently looking at rocks all weekend wasn’t enough, I had to make some noise too. 🤘🎸

Haggerty’s Music in Rapid City was epic. Incredible instruments everywhere, and everyone there was super nice and welcoming. Could’ve happily spent the entire afternoon in this place.

A little whiskey-soaked history in Deadwood. 🤠🥃

Stopped at Wild Bill Bar, the original site of Saloon No. 10, where Wild Bill Hickok was shot from behind by Jack McCall during a poker game on August 2, 1876. Pretty wild standing where that piece of Old West history unfolded.

What a way to wrap up the weekend, a spontaneous airport jam with some really cool musicians before heading home to Austin. 🎸🤘

@thepaulmcdonald awesome meeting you, man! Hit me up next time you’re in Austin. 🍻

Murder Mystery Dinner tonight at Sylvan Lake Lodge in @custerstateparksd. Themed around the late 1930s, Cherri and I went all out and had a blast! Beautiful night ... great food ... and fun drama!
