You may know him behind the tubs and mic for @coffin_aus, but when Ben Portnoy (@sexy_on_site) isn’t stirring up a crowd he can often be found in the pit with a camera slung over his shoulder, filming some of the best of Australia’s underground.

As part of C.O.F.F.I.N’s Guest Program on ABC this weekend, we’ll be lining up a stack of clips that Ben has worked on. His music videos really capture the sights and sounds of the communities he’s apart of, and we’re really stoked to dedicate some time to a bunch of bands who haven’t been played on rage before.

If you can the arsed staying up till 4am tonight to see them, we’ll be doing a repeat of the Ben Portnoy special on Tuesday night from 11:20pm.

For now, have a swipe though this carousel and have a read about Ben’s music video process.

BEN: I’ve been fascinated with photos and video since I was a child looking through picture albums that showed worlds different from the one I’d be sitting in. While visiting relatives overseas I’d be happy to sit and sift through hours of unedited VHS tapes that would buzz out these arcane and fuzzy vignettes.

BEN: I’m fascinated by the kind of alchemy that goes on in these machine sculptures and enjoy how it’s magic brings people together. Together not just as an audience but also as creators. One of my favourite components of video making is getting friends side-by-side to do the thing!

BEN: Most of my early work was shot using tape-film cameras because that’s what I had access too. Mum’s Sony Hi-8 camcorder, the mini-DV tape dad cams we got to film skateboarding, and old shoulder mounted full size VHS cameras I’d find at Vinnie’s or Cash-converters.

BEN: Still now I like the physicality of those units and how they become a contributor to the video’s aesthetic - how you sometimes have to work with what they give you on the other side. They changed the way I look at the world and how to be present in it. As well as made me conscious of being economical with what I pressed the red button for as you usually only got an hour out of a tape. I still try shoot with that sensibility even if I’ve got a never ending memory card situation running. The idea o

Magnificent slice of blistering, angry hardcore punk from 2024 by this coastal-Melbourne outfit who features Stiff Richards/Public House folks. Short/fast/loud, as it should be.

⛓️‍💥NO BARRIERS - EPISODE 42 - RAD FEST PT 2⛓️‍💥

Radio Fest might be over, but there is still time to go into our major prize draws if you sign up as a member or renew your PBS membership before the end of June! There’s never been a better time to support community radio and support Aussie music!

This week’s show was all AUHC! All bands doing incredible things right now in recent years and the only bad thing was that this show was 10 hours long!

@love__buzzz joined me on the show with a few of her fave tracks and to have a yap about why PBS is so great. Grace will be looking after a couple of No Barriers shows while I’m away so make sure to text in and say hiya!

👉 Hit the link in bio to join or renew your membership and listen to the full show!
