Human – wildlife interactions aren’t always conflicts with nature. Often, they are clashes between instinct and circumstance. In the forests of Maharashtra and Gujarat, villagers faced dangerous encounters with sloth bears, whose first response when startled was to defend themselves.

To help prevent these encounters, wildlife experts (@nishith_dharaiya ), the Wildlife & Conservation Biology Research Foundation and conservation teams developed the Ghanti Kathi, a simple stick fitted with bells and a non-lethal deterrent. Slowly, reports indicated a significant reduction in sudden encounters.

The Ghanti Kathi showed that protecting both people and wildlife didn’t require complex technology. A simple, thoughtful idea could help create safer space for everyone.
