I’ve paddled a lot of rivers. I’ve led a lot of trips. This one is going to stay with me for a while, not because of a rapid or a line, but because of a prayer in a language older than the sport itself, and a group of people learning the true names of the place they were floating through.

❄️ Winter 2025–26
Despite missing 132 days due to surgery (but who’s counting?) and a very weird winter, I still managed to get on the mountain for 30 days.
A lot of lessons were learned from the couch this season, but one of the best parts of getting back on snow was having more chairlift rides and laps with friends than I’ve had in the past few years combined. Slowing down allowed me to do that.
Grateful to be healing and recovering, and for the reminder of how much joy and connection skiing brings into my life. Stoked just to be able to slide on snow again.
Many thanks to all the faces by my side and behind the scenes who helped me get here. Here’s to many more turns and memories to come. ⛷️

It takes a river of people to make a day like this happen.

Last month, we brought community members out onto the Upper Truckee River for a day of paddling, connection, and access to water that should never have been hard to reach in the first place.

That day didn’t happen because of one org or one grant. It happened because a whole community said yes.

The Washoe Tribe of California, for welcoming us onto your land and trusting us with this work.

Watching returning paddlers help the first-timers find their balance, share what they learned and step into the role of mentor almost without noticing they’re doing it — that’s what river access and stewardship actually looks like — not just a single day but a thread that keeps pulling people back to the water and to each other.

We were honored to welcome 13 young paddlers representing 8 Tribes from around the Feather River for their 2nd annual whitewater kayaking clinic on the South Fork American.

For some, this was their first time in a kayak — that mix of nerves and excitement as they found their edge on moving water for the first time. For others who took this clinic last summer, came back stronger, more confident, ready to push further.

We are grateful to 4 Winds and everyone who made this clinic possible — and grateful most of all to these 13 paddlers. Getting in a kayak for the first time takes courage. Getting back in after you already know how hard it can be takes something just as real.

A river finding its way into a lake. 35 of us following it.

Our community paddling day on the Upper Truckee River and Lake Tahoe opened with a Washoe prayer — spoken on land that’s been Washoe home for thousands of years. Tribal members, participants from diverse backgrounds and one river teaching all of us its real names.

Free. Always will be, for who it’s meant for.
