The Dutch Cycling Embassy (DCE) supports cities and regions worldwide in making cycling a natural part of daily life.

Had the honor of filming and taking part in the 8th edition of the Orange Bike Ride, organized by Rota, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Malta, and Friends of the Earth Malta! 🚴‍♂️🇳🇱🍊
I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect going in, but it blew me away. A massive crowd of around 150 cyclists took to the roads this year! With key routes temporarily cordoned off, riding through the heart of Malta gave us a rare glimpse of what cycling here could actually feel like without the constant stress of heavy traffic.
Navigating the route—especially on an e-bike—was fast, smooth, and effortless. Sitting at a few junction lights was the only real pause, proving just how efficient and liberating cycling across our island can be when given proper space and safety. It’s a real pity we don’t get to experience roads like this every day, but events like this show the incredible potential for a better, more human-centric future for Maltese transport.
A big thank you to the organizers for inviting me to document the event, and a massive word of thanks to the Malta Police Force, LESA, and the Emergency Ambulance services for managing the route, keeping everyone safe, and making sure the ride ran smoothly!

Trains are arguably the most efficient piece of public transport systems. Countries which saw its potential early and invested in building the network are benefiting from it today.

For instance, The Dutch Rail network is one of the most heavily utilised rail networks in Europe. Although not comparable in terms of ridership numbers with India-the Railways have high demand and usage, but clearly fall short in providing the quality of experience.

I am motivated to commute on a bicycle when I have -

✅Safe Infrastructure
🌳Green Landscape
🔇Silent streets
🅿️Free Parking space
🧺🚲A bike with a storage option
🚏Streets with speed limits of 30km/hr or 🐢
🚉Easy connection with Metro/Train/Bus/Ferry

Then I am happy to dress-up for the occasion👔🤵🏻‍♂️ and not for the journey 👷‍♂️🦺

To all the politicians, bureaucrats, planning departments, engineers, urban designers, road & transport ministers, real estate companies-if you have still not understood it then don’t hesitate to ask us on how to do it and re-align the future investments for 🏡green cities and not 🏢grey ones.

At the @eu_indiamobility, I shared our learnings with @movewithmybyk. One of the insight was on how tech which was supposed to be an enabler to make bikes accessible itself became the barrier because quite a large section of the target audience couldn’t use mobile phones (senior citizens) or didn’t carry one (students) or because of language barriers.

And this is why, we believe that cards (tap and ride) will be an important interface for realising the vision of multi-modal integrated mobility along with the mobile app.

Further, by making our e-bikes available on the ONDC network the bikes can be unlocked via any mobility app.

The Dutch people have made the use of public transport cost-efficient and time-saving.

The public transport eco-system is lucrative for millions of passengers who use the bike & train combination every year.

@indian_railways_officel @mumbaimetro @ashwini.vaishnaw Can we prioritise the use of bikes+train combination in Indian cities ?

Thanks for making it special, and safe travels back home. We'll be publishing a gallery with all of the best photos from the show very soon. And don't despair, we're active all year round so keep following us for cargo bike inspiration!

We're also publishing Carrier, our magazine telling the human stories behind the cargo bike, in the spring. So stay tuned for that too.

➔ While we've got you; if you have any feedback about ICBF 2026, please reach out and let us know. We'll be sending out an evaluation soon, but even if you don't get it, we want to hear what worked and what didn't at the show this year. That way, we can improve it for 2027. Our DMs are open!
