Kind of amazing to have someone drop in, quite literally, from the sky, for a visit. Dusty called, from the sky, having flown from Boulder, to let us know he might drop in for a visit. We walked over to the nearby park, where there’s a baseball diamond, and watched him circle overhead, then casually land… we then walked over to the house where he packed up his paraglider and we made lunch.

It was a transformative experience. I had been dreaming about it for so long, hoping for an alignment of weather, time, and all the parts of our collective lives to come together to allow for this flight. Lifting off the earth, skipping over rocks and dirt only to leap out into the void, was a mind-blowing moment. Suddenly, we’re suspended, far above the land, circling gently, and oddly, I feel no fear, no anxiety, I’m relaxed, completely comfortable as your passenger. The sky is impossibly blue, voluminous cumulonimbus clouds are blowing up and moving our way over the sharp rocky ridge of the foothills. You read the air so fluently, seeking and finding columns of lift and guiding me to lean into the turns. I feel connected in our sinuous path. Effortlessly you find thermals and core them, circling higher and higher. The feeling of soaring so high feels otherworldly, my stomach flip flops, I should have eaten more for breakfast! The sensation of hanging out there in space, dangling so far above terra firma, reminds me of sailing on the ocean, so far out to sea that no land is visible. A kind of stunning tilt on being human. It’s a unique kind of experience, and a feeling I won’t forget. The view is astonishing- we can see the Continental Divide, we can see for miles in every direction, the world below is a harlequin patchwork of Lilliputian beauty. We’re flying - really flying in a way I never imagined possible.
I’m back on the ground now, our gentle landing, the grace of our tandem flight, seeing the world from such an entirely new place, all a glowing abstraction in my blown mind…

I’m a fan of trees. Always have been. This is a small subset of the Tree Memory Card sets that Jim and I created a while back. The originals are in color but I like seeing them this way. The trees are from all over, and show trees, leaves, fruit, anything tree-related…the “PEACE” twig sign we made in our front yard at the time at our old house in Boulder, Colorado- right after 911. There are moss-covered trees from Olympia, Washington, leaves from Portland, Oregon, a photo of a lone tree from San Francisco, California that Dusty shared, shadows, peaches, pine cones, driftwood… it’s interesting how far you can take a single theme in photography.
