Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has taken credit for bringing back “every last” hostage from Gaza. But of the hostages abducted alive on October 7th, about 1 in 5 died or were killed in captivity.
And more than half of those deaths can be traced back to Israeli military actions.
@talshalev & I spoke to dozens of families & Israeli officials to piece together how these 40 hostages died — and why.

Israeli flags, military checkpoints & enormous destruction. This is a rare look inside Israeli-occupied southern Lebanon — and the Lebanese Army’s efforts to regain control of its territory, from both Israel and Hezbollah.

Full report: We accompanied Palestinian-American Loui Ridi to his West Bank home, which has been besieged by Israeli settlers for over a week. What we found: a robust Israeli military presence that has stopped the settlers from reestablishing their outpost, but failed to keep settlers from roaming the area and repeatedly violating the closed military zone.

Trapped and cut off.
For 5 days now, Israeli settlers have laid siege to 3 homes in the Palestinian village of Qusra. The Israeli military has tried — and so far failed — to remove the settlers. But when we tried to reach the homes, it was Israeli soldiers who stopped us.

This week, highlighting my colleagues @jdiamond1_ @zeenasaifi @cyrilthps_ @abeersalmancnn who have put together a really compelling, deep dive for CNN Explains on the status of President Trump’s 20 Gaza peace plan. They have pulled a lot of important information together in one place to give a much needed, comprehensive look at what was supposed to happen, what is actually happening and the reasons for the glaring disparity therein. Congrats to the team. Link in my stories!

I first interviewed Kamel Musallet a year ago at his 20-year-old son’s funeral. Saif was beaten to death by Israeli settlers & Kamel wanted justice for his son.
A year later, we returned in an armored vehicle & bulletproof vests to the spot where his son was killed. You’ll understand why we took those precautions when you watch.

Sam Abu Haikal was just 7 months old when he was killed by an Israeli soldier who opened fire on his family’s car last week. The Israeli military says it is investigating the shooting.
But this is not an isolated incident — he is the 13th child to be killed in the occupied West Bank by the IDF so far this year.

Six-year-old Ayoub Juneid from Gaza went viral after a video showed him in tears, pleading for someone to fix his broken specialized glasses. He can barely see without them and suffers from a neurological condition that can’t be treated in Gaza. Like thousands of other children, Ayoub requires a medical evacuation, but those are few eight months after the ceasefire.

Gaza’s health care system has been decimated by more than two years of Israeli bombardment. And thousands of children like Ayoub who need medical treatment outside of Gaza still can’t leave.
Israel agreed to facilitate the medical evacuation of 50 gazan patients per day as part of the ceasefire.
On average, fewer than 7 per day have been evacuated since the October ceasefire, according to World Health Organization data.
