12 hrs in the city is all I need

This is by no means a perfect mixtape. I believe if it was going to be, it wouldn’t have been worth making.

Virginia is for lovers, at least that’s what they say, but I often find myself resenting going home.

I remember waking up in my brother’s room with my younger sister and father telling me that mom had“moved on to be with the Lord.” When I went down to look at her greyed-out body in my parents’ bed, I was filled with a sense of loneliness and regret. What I had called home for 21 years had ceased being that for me.

I wish I could go back to the days before she got sick and appreciate the times she would wake me up early to drive me to school, or force me to do homework and eat greens. It’s still hard for me to appreciate things while I’m still in them. I rarely appreciated Oklahoma for the five years I lived there. I couldn’t appreciate LA until I was confident I was leaving. And I still have yet to find a true, authentic appreciation for New York City.

I’m starting to remember Virginia though — how the trees would create a cascade of reds and oranges against the blue sky, how in the summers my dad would take over some of the cooking responsibilities, making us burgers, hot dogs, and his very own “beefstula.”

That’s what this project truly is — a letter to my different homes, told through picture & song. It’s meant to help me, and hopefully you, appreciate the moments you’re in, whether that’s heartbreak or wanderlust. I hope you find a lyric frame or melody that resonates with your spirit, body, mind, or soul.
