What happens when AI is given a body?

Our friend Cyrus Clarke @cyrusclarke , a researcher, designer, and technologist at MIT Media Lab, connected an AI agent to a shape display made of 900 individually motorised pins.

Interestingly, the AI began developing its own body language, writing new code to create new gestures and finding new ways to physically express itself.

This is what interests us most about emerging technology: what new forms of expression can emerge when artists, designers, and technologists experiment with it together?

What could happen if an AI like this became part of an artwork, installation, or performance?

Join HARD MODE, the Hardware x AI community for an evening of physical intelligence • THU 28th MAY for BosTechWeek (RSVP LINK IN BIO)

What you’ll experience:
• Interactive prototypes from the HARD MODE community including: Duck Typing, Human Operator, Dreaming Objects, and more
• Live demo of “I gave an AI a body” (15M+ views online, now in person)
• Lightning showcases from builders

We’re bringing together the engineers, designers, builders and founders of tomorrow alongside working hardware you can touch, test, and talk about with the people who built it.

Bring your curiosity. Bring your own project if you’ve got one. Just show up ready to interact with intelligence that’s left the screen.

🗓️ Thursday, May 28, 6-9pm
📍 MIT Media Lab, Building E15-341

Co-hosted with E14 Fund, MIT Media Lab’s AHA (Advancing Humans with AI) and MIT Design Intelligence Lab (Department of Architecture).

Part of Boston Tech Week 2026.

—
HARD MODE is the Hardware × AI community — 300+ builders creating the future of physical intelligence. We run hackathons, develop products, and create the infrastructure to find, shape, and amplify the best new hardware founders.

Our first event brought 200 hackers to MIT Media Lab, producing 40 projects with support from Anthropic, Qualcomm, and Akamai.

E14 Fund is the early-stage venture fund officially affiliated with MIT. E14 invests in AI and deep tech startups from MIT and beyond, while also donating a share of profits back to MIT. www.e14.vc

This event is a part of #BosTechWeek—a week of events hosted by VCs and startups to bring together the tech ecosystem. Learn more at www.tech-week.com

We are thrilled to announce this year’s Finalists for the Sadakichi Award for Experimental Work with Scent.

At the Art and Olfaction Awards, the Sadakichi Award for Experimental Work with Scent is given to creative or experimental practitioners who make unconventional use of scent, that takes it out of the domain of traditional perfumery.

Here are the five Experimental Finalists of 2026:

El Espacio Vientre
Artist: Delcy Morelos @delcymorelos
Perfumer: Nadjib Achaibou @nadjib_achaibou

A cavernous installation of 40 tons of red soil and evolving fragrance immerses visitors in the living smell of earth, with notes of petrichor, roots, humidity, mycorrhizae, and mineral darkness, as a meditation on vitality and transformation.

Goavve-Geabbil (Hyundai Commission)
Artist: Máret Ánne Sara @maretannesara
Perfumer: Nadjib Achaibou @nadjib_achaibou
Collaborator: Angel Palacios

An immersive installation blending traditional Sámi materials with contemporary art, three olfactory compositions were created as invisible emotional signals evoking the world of the reindeer, the land, and the fragile balance between fear and renewal.

Hang Our Gods
Artist and Perfumer: Regina Mamou @reginamamou

Paired tinctures link Nebuchadnezzar II’s Babylon to Saddam’s Iraq, staging olfactory dialogues on political authority and concealment.

The Anemoia Device
Artist and Perfumer: Cyrus Clarke @cyrusclarke
Collaborators: Melo Chen, Nomy Yu, Yuen Zou

A scent-memory machine that distills photographs into bespoke fragrances, evoking anemoia: nostalgia for a time one has never lived.

Three Kings
Artist and Perfumer: Sigrid Moses-Jacobsen @sigridmosesjacobsen
Collaborators: Thoranna Bjornsdottir, Christa Obuchowski, Sarah John

Reinterpreting an old Danish Epiphany tradition into a modern New Year ritual, this is a limited-edition ritual box that unites scent, sound, poetry, and handcrafted objects to create an intimate, multisensory experience for a small group.

🎥 TC MIT Series — @cyrusclarke

We visited our friend Cyrus at the MIT Media Lab, where he was working on giving AI a body, something that feels straight out of Black Mirror.

Turbulence Creative’s co-founder @roxanne_zjx is at MIT visiting labs, meeting students and researchers, and seeing what kind of secret experiments they’ve been up to lately. Then sharing these insights to y’all.

‼️Why does this matter to artists?👩🏻‍🎨
Because what’s being built here could unlock entirely new ways to think, make, and create.

Stay tuned for more 👀

Cambridge. MIT. A room full of creators and founders who are building the future.

Two nights ago we hosted our latest CxF dinner with @mit.cap — and the conversations didn’t disappoint.

From what people are building, to how they’re building it, to why the depth in that room was something.

An MIT researcher just gave AI a physical body to control.

The first thing it did...was breathe.

Pretty insane.

The researcher’s name is @cyrusclarke

And that white device is a shape display that’s designed to help visualize the digital world.

Now all Cyrus did was connect the AI to it and said, “discover yourself”

No instructions. No pre-programming.

And the AI’s first instinct was to create a breathing pattern.

Like it was waking up for the first time.

But it didn’t stop there.

By Day 2, the AI had built itself a vocabulary of six physical gestures.

A ripple for hello. A forward lean for yes.

It invented its own body language.

Then, Cyrus put it in front of a mirror.

And this is pretty wild.

The AI recognized its own reflection and started adjusting its movements based on what it saw.

No one programmed any of this.

It figured all of it out on its own.

Now there’s a theory in science called embodied cognition.

The idea that intelligence doesn’t fully develop without a body to go with the brain.

Turns out, this AI might have just proved that to be true.

Because its first reaction when it got a body was to breathe.

Shoutout Cyrus!

At the @hardmodemit hackathon, we tried to rethink what future ai in objects should look like…

When we think of giving ai physical capabilities, the first thought is a humanoid robot that can do everything, but that isn’t cute.

So instead of giving a bunch of new ability to one device, we tried to buff up each object a little💪, so they can all coordinate and do stuff together in a way that’s slightly more lovely.

Which object is your favorite?

Check out how we won the grand prize (50K) at @hardmodemit , the first AI Hardware hackathon.

We built 4 objects in 48hours, with new abilities for each object that brings them to life. They also communicate each other to figure out how to best help the user, just like the movie beauty and the beast ✨✨
