What a season! ✨ Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater brought dance to Atlanta like never before. From Spelman masterclasses with Alicia Graf Mack to AREA’s Revelations excerpts at Elizabeth Baptist, screenings at SCAD FASH, Center for Civil & Human Rights, and Serenbe, plus Dance for Active Aging Adults—we loved every moment of community connection. 💃🖤 #AileyAndAtlanta #DanceForAll #AtlantaArts

Last November, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (@alvinailey) announced that @aliciagrafmack would become its next artistic director. Graf Mack’s trajectory seems to have prepared her for this role. During a brilliant career as a dancer with both @dancetheatreofharlem and Ailey, she acquired two academic degrees on the side, in history and arts management. After retiring from the stage, she went on to become the director of The @juilliardschool’s Dance Division, where she has spent the last seven years thoughtfully expanding the august academy’s approach to dance training. Now, she will be returning to Ailey, where her term as artistic director begins on July 1. She will be only the fourth person to hold the position, after Ailey himself, his chosen successor, Judith Jamison, and the choreographer Robert Battle.

Thinking about Judi and one of my proudest moments as a presenter. On August 10, 1993, (last photo) Alvin Ailey performed in Central Park to thousands at a free show at SummerStage. We danced “The Winter in Lisbon” by Billy Wilson; “Shelter” by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar; and of course, “Revelations.” Seventeen years later, I negotiated with the company’s GM, the late great Calvin Hunt, to bring the company back to the venue in summer of 2010, for its second only large-scale, free-admission full length performance in New York. I would then present their third in 2022 at SummerStage Coney Island! Judi was fantastic greeting the audience who were treated to “Blues Suite” by Alvin; “Dancing Spirit” by Ronald K. Brown; and “Revelations.” She had such an incredible way of talking to audiences, earthy yet regal, and always with positivity and joy, something I aspire to emulate in my dealings with the public. What a beacon. I miss her. So much.
