I had the pleasure of presenting ‘Gaggle’ in the village of Kalavasos, Cyprus.
Realised in collaboration with @paul_stan_nataraj & Mohamed B. Slama, who created the electrifying and special sound for the performance, and @amaiamolinet , who led a ritualistic procession from my performance to Paul’s.
The installation draws attention to the labour involved in producing, handling and moving materials on a large scale. Sugar becomes a metaphor for labour and mass production, connecting to the Kalavasos mines and the wider history of Cyprus, where sugar was once a major export to Europe.
Through the audience participation, filling, carrying and arranging the tea cups, the work brought the everyday into the industrial space of the Olive Mill.
A very special thank you to the people of Kalavasos who lent their tea cups and became part of the work. 🤍

More special thanks to @d6culture & @contesteddesires for the opportunity. 🩵

ASSEMBLE Partners: Spotlight on @larnaka2030

Larnaka 2030 was established in 2022 by the Municipality of Larnaca to lead the city's bid for European Capital of Culture 2030, a title Larnaka has now won, joining Leuven (Belgium) and Nikšić (Montenegro) as European Capitals of Culture in 2030. Its mission is to enable long-term sustainable cultural development for Larnaka, empowering local artists and cultural workers and promoting equality and access to culture for diverse communities.

Larnaka has long been a historic safe haven for displaced populations from Palestine and Syria to Armenia, and more recently Ukraine and Sub-Saharan Africa. Today, a considerable proportion of the population of the city's registered voters have a lived experience or heritage of refugee status. ASSEMBLE continues this story.

Within the ASSEMBLE Artist-Curator Fellowship, Larnaka 2030 will host the first Curators' Lab in Larnaca in June 2026, as the city prepares for its year as European Capital of Culture and co-host the Cyprus-based Artist-Curator in Residence alongside @d6_eu_, providing space, access to communities and resources, and audience development support.

Singing to the shadow of the olive tree – Paul Nataraj - Sept 12 / 20:10 - 21:00

EN
Paul Nataraj’s work considers the relationship between materiality, memory and sound, focusing on migration, diaspora and postcolonial identity. Working with sound, text, speech, found sound, field recordings, poetry and modified media, he captures the scalar, spatial and temporal shifts that constitute the complex trajectories of postcolonial identities. His sound works have been broadcast by BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction and NTS, among others, and he has contributed to numerous publications including The Routledge Companion to Sound Studies.

In Lisbon, Paul created ‘The Good Hope Solidarity Score’, a rudimentary musical translation of Vasco da Gama’s journey from Portugal to Goa, which he invited others to interpret and paired with a rice-seed installation. For his residency at Xarkis, with Amaia Molinet and Ziza, Paul will invite residents to work with this melody to create a sung intervention and a choreography drawing on his research on the politics of plants and nutrition.

ΕΛ

Στη Λισαβόνα, ο Paul δημιούργησε το “The Good Hope Solidarity Score”, μια στοιχειώδη μουσική μετάφραση του ταξιδιού του Vasco da Gama από την Πορτογαλία στη Γκόα, την οποία κάλεσε άλλους να ερμηνεύσουν και συνόδευσε με μια εγκατάσταση από σπόρους ρυζιού.

💭🔔 The £1,000 Imagination Infrastructure Seed Commissions are open for applications. 💭🔔

Together with our creative community, we've been spending time imagining different futures, asking bold questions, sharing experiences and exploring what might become possible when creativity is placed alongside community organising, collective action and local leadership ✊

Apply by 3rd August, 12 noon 🔔

🤔 Whilst events like this can be powerful catalysts, we are interested in what happens next...

💭 How do ideas move beyond conversations?

💭 How do moments of inspiration become practical experiments?

💭 How do artists and communities begin to test alternative ways of working, organising and creating change?

💸 To support this next stage, we are offering x5 £1,000 seed commissions that will enable individuals, groups and organisations to develop and test ideas emerging from the themes and conversations explored through the event.

🔗 READ MORE/APPLY > LINK IN BIO

🔍 These commissions are intentionally small.

🧪 They are intended to create space for experimentation and learning. We are interested in supporting people to trial an experiment in Imagination Practice. Imagination isn’t just about dreaming of different futures but can also about creating the conditions to explore them. Through these commissions we want to support practical acts of imagination that help people rehearse, test and experience alternatives in the present, here in County Durham.
