The Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash occurred on October 20, 1977, when the Southern rock band’s chartered Convair CV-240 ran out of fuel and crashed in a heavily wooded area near Gillsburg, Mississippi. The disaster claimed the lives of six people, including frontman Ronnie Van Zant, and completely shattered the band at the absolute peak of their commercial success. Today marks the 49th anniversary of this definitive tragedy in rock history

This week on The Lowdown Hoedown, we’ll put the spotlight on Eric Clapton’s 1994 Blues Tour, supporting the influential “From The Cradle” album.

Eric Clapton’s legendary 1994 “Nothing But the Blues” Tour (also famously supporting his multi-platinum, all-blues studio album From the Cradle) ran from October 3 to November 28, 1994. The historic North American trek was entirely dedicated to traditional electric and acoustic blues standards, with Clapton and his band playing no solo rock hits or pop material.

We’ll be playing tracks from the September 1994 rehearsals in New York City and November 1994 performances from the Fillmore in San Francisco.

Clapton assembled an elite, heavy-hitting backing group to deliver raw, authentic blues dynamics night after night:

• Guitars: Eric Clapton & Andy Fairweather Low
• Bass: Dave Bronze
• Drums: Andy Newmark
• Harmonica: Jerry Portnoy
• Keyboards: Chris Stainton
• The Horn Section: Simon Clarke (sax), Tim Sanders (sax), and Roddy Lorimer (trumpet)

Our Psychedelic Snack, courtesy of The Mellow Mushroom, is The Steve Miller Band’s 1970 release, ‘Number 5.’

Jayne Constant returned to the classroom after more than 20 years in the workforce. She’s building on her experience as a graphic designer, muralist, business owner and communications professional while pursuing an associate degree in Computer and Information Technologies.

Through a paid work-study placement, she is using her creative background and the technical skills she’s learning at SKYCTC as a digital strategist and media personality at @d93rocksbg in Bowling Green.

Now, she hopes to encourage other creatives to explore the possibilities technology can bring to their work.

“If you’re an artist or designer who thinks you’re not a tech person, expand your horizons,” Jayne said. “Technology is going to play a vital part in every creative field.”

When I was in high school, used to look at Cream & Jimi Hendrix photos, and dream of owning a Marshall amp.

Now a 15 watt amp is too loud on stage.

Two great players that deserve way more credit. Barry Bailey & J.R. Cobb of ARS. I wish I had gotten to know both better. I had one nice email correspondence with Barry before he passed away. I also met him briefly at a street festival we played together. Those ARS albums are wonderful, great band!

Barry played a 1969 Les Paul Deluxe Goldtop with mini-humbuckers into a 50 watt plexi. He always plugged into the lower gain input. JR was a great rhythm, lead and slide player. Another great guitar team like Duane & Dickey.

Greetings from Electric Lazyland! I’ve had a few days off from traveling, the taxes are ready to turn in on Tuesday, ready to play some Blues for everyone Monday night.

This Monday night on The Lowdown Hoedown, we’ll put the spotlight on Irish music legend, Rory Gallagher.

William Rory Gallagher (March 2, 1948 – June 14, 1995) was a virtuosic Irish blues-rock guitarist, singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. Widely celebrated as “Ireland’s first rock star” and the “people’s guitarist,” he sold over 30 million records worldwide and played more than 2,000 legendary, high-energy live concerts. He is famously associated with his heavily road-worn 1961 Sunburst Fender Stratocaster, which became a defining symbol of his raw, unadorned, working-class approach to rock and blues.

Also on the playlist for Monday night, Charlie Musselwhite & GA-20, Elvin Bishop, Ray Charles, Blind Boy Fuller, Sleepy John Estes, Blind Willie Johnson, Big Walter Horton, Willie Nix, Johnny Shines, Chris Cain and more.

Our Psychedelic Snack, courtesy of The Mellow Mushroom, is Paul Revere & The Raiders from 1967 & 1968.

Hey gang, hope everyone’s having a wonderful Fall. I’ve got a few days off from traveling, I’m busy doing my 2025 taxes. Yep, the extension runs out Oct. 15th, gotta get ‘er done!

I’m really looking forward to tonight’s radio show and visiting with my old friend Kyle Frederick. Kyle will join me in the studio to perform a couple times with the talented Ian Lovelace and play tracks from his new album, ‘The Force Majure.’

Frederick’s eight studio album, The Force Majeure was recorded at Cash Cabin, the studio built by icon Johnny Cash in 1979. The project focuses on the confounding moral realities of our time, and features guest performances by Michael Webb, Jenee Fleenor, Odessa Settles, Jonell Mosser, Ashley Cleveland, Heidi Gluck and a feature vocal performance by Sandra McCracken. The album is the first of Frederick’s catalog to be available on vinyl.

Our artist spotlight this week is Robin Trower and his first two iconic releases, ‘Twice Removed From Yesterday’ (1973) and ‘Bridge Of Sighs’ (1974).

Robin Trower is an influential English rock guitarist, songwriter, and producer who initially rose to fame in the late 1960s with the progressive rock band Procol Harum. Renowned for his atmospheric, blues-infused style, his expressive Fender Stratocaster work often draws comparison to Jimi Hendrix. Trower achieved massive commercial and critical heights after launching his own power trio, the Robin Trower Band, in the 1970s

Our Psychedelic Snack, courtesy of The Mellow Mushroom, is from Jimi Hendrix’s 1971 classic “Cry of Love’ & “Broken Baricades’ by Procol Harum, featuring Robin Trower.
