Little Lorraine | directed by Andy Hines

From the bowels of a lobster boat last summer to the world premiere @tiff_net & NS premiere @atlanticfilmfest this month… so many people’s talent and hard work went in to this film.

The only thing I enjoy more than shooting movies is shooting movies with my friends and there were a whole lot of them this go around.
Grateful and thankful.

Bringing Little Lorraine, a deeply Nova Scotian story told, written, and made by Nova Scotians and set in Nova Scotia, has taken my dreams for a first feature film to new heights.

I always wanted my debut to center on a Nova Scotian story and to pursue this genre of “Easterns.” Seeing it come to life on Cape Breton warms me to no end. It all began with Adam’s incredible song, which brought together an amazing group of people and gave new life to the dreamers and doers who want to make films where they are from, with Nova Scotians by their side.

I got my start in film here while studying at King’s College and Dalhousie. Much of the support I received came from people already working in the industry or carving their own path forward, like my dear friends @jlevangie, @jasoneisener, @marcakamark, @sethasmith @nanzore and many others.

Kris Gilbert used to let me borrow a doorway dolly and track on Friday nights, as long as I returned it before White’s opened on Monday morning. Her generosity gave me the equipment I needed to film my short, which eventually led to my acceptance at the American Film Institute.

When I wasn’t accepted the first year I applied, it was local film staples Steve Mayhew and Mike Melski who told me I needed to try again because they believed I had something to offer as a filmmaker. I owe so much to them for their encouragement. I owe a lot to Mike Clattenburg as well, who believed in me enough to spend months writing an incredible movie together in his basement.

Thank you to Mike Volpe, Tim Houston, and Laura Mackenzie for championing me now and for sharing this vision of Nova Scotian films reaching the wider world with our province’s name on them.

A huge thank you to our crew and cast for supporting me in this wild adventure of bringing Little Lorraine to life.

PS, @jacobmanning__ you have gone well beyond the call I gave you asking to cover my time at TIFF. You are so talented, and I love to see you work, I’ll be watching now and well into the future!

@rachieskarsten, what an ABSOLUTE joy it was being your scene partner in Christmas Island. Sharing laughs and running lines between takes made my time on set enjoyable and memorable! Your professionalism, humour, warmth and down-to-earth spirit were a delight. Working with you is an experience I will always cherish. 🥰

I’m thankful for the crew on Christmas Island — the familiar faces I see behind the camera who always make me feel “right at home.” Ya’ll, we have a special group of people (crew) here in NS who work extremely hard behind the scenes to create film projects that we all get to watch on screen and enjoy. In addition, the many background performers who are a big part of bringing a story to life. It’s no wonder many productions choose Nova Scotia to film their projects (and our stunning landscapes help)!

To our director #DavidWeaver, thank you for your guidance and encouraging my own expressions of Robin Saltz. I had so many laughs on this set — and it is truly a Hallmark debut I am incredibly grateful to have.

And @d_filly for this comical addition to our photo … now that’s a chicken bone I can chew on over Christmas. 🤣

THANK YOU, family and friends, for watching and supporting this good ol’ East Coast, heart-warming Christmas movie - Christmas Island!

If you haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, don’t worry, there’s still time. Check your listings on the Hallmark Channel and W Network for reruns of Christmas Island. 🎄

Directed by: DavidWeaver
Written by: @s_hermy
