Whether it be landscape, photo journalism, portrait, etc. there is a photo contest out there for any type of photography. Admittedly I have been religious in submitting to the “most recognized adventure and action sports photography contest” @theillumeawards (formerly The Red Bull Illume). Since I first discovered it 10 years ago I wanted to be a part of it and every time I have submitted I have gotten into the semi-finalist category. The semi-finals could be labeled as an Honorable Mention (which I still am very much proud of), but considering how many submissions there are to this action sports specific contest it holds that much more weight. There were over 15,000 images submitted from all over the globe this year. These submissions are from people that are getting magazine covers, landing huge clients, and are just wickedly creative. To have not one but nine of my own images in the semi’s (highest submission yield I’ve ever had) is a wild thought. Additionally, my selected images were not just of kayaking, which was usually the strongest action photos I’ve had in the past. A win win win. This is all to say that I honestly was a little unsure of the caliber of images I submitted, compared to those who crush elsewhere. But by gum as Michael Scott (Wayne Gretzky) once said “You’ll miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”. And here we are, now holding my breath to hopefully have at least one of my images advance into the next round: Finalists a round I’ve never reached. But ask any of the photographers who are semi-finalist and they will say that it’s an honor to just be in this round. Here’s hoping for the best!

June on the North Fork Payette. I kind of took the sensations of this month for granted when the NFC was an annual event for a decade. But here we are, opening an old book of warm and fuzzy feelings for its revival. The excitement of seeing friends from all over the globe, the anticipation of who will be on the podium, seeing everyone just in a flow state… shits good. Somehow had time to pick up a camera just before the @northforkchampionship this year and was reminded how lucky we are to have this corridor and event in our backyard. #christmasinjune #whitewaterismagic

@d_larrow_ - Brotha D !! Growing up in Jackson, Wyoming 🇺🇸, Driscoll has been a force in the kayaking scene since graduating from the @jhkayakclub . Earlier this year Driscoll stepped up in a big way during an incredible rain event in the PNW that brought in a couple elusive stouts only a few G’s have stepped up to! He notched the 2nd descent of Big Falls on Big Falls Creek (after legend @patkeller406 routed it first in 2018!) with @_hullspeed notching the 3rd descent. Driscoll also stepped up to the 3rd descent of ultra rowdy Rattlesnake Falls (after @fear_and_boating sent it first and @haydenvoorheeskayak 2nd in 2021). Driscoll is also responsible for starting the conversation with the Byrd’s for the return of NFC (and is in charge of setting the Jacob’s Ladder racecourse) so buy him a 🍺 when you see him! If you were given a million dollars right now, how would you spend it? Give 100,000 to this event and keep the rest. What is your favorite rapid? Nutcracker, NF Payette. 2026 goal? 9 years of World Class • 5/5 | Focus Through these 5 posts and 100 images, I’ve been trying to use photography as a tool to reflect. To remember moments. To sit with moments. To turn back the clock and feel these moments. To remind myself why we choose an alternative path and to embrace the unknown. These images only scratch the surface and represent a fraction of the students and faculty I’ve gratefully shared time with. At the end of the day, there is so much more to what we do than kayak, but these moments of joy on the river are the easiest to capture and the closest we can get to capturing this magic of WHY. I’ve also been trying to use aspects of photography metaphorically to share my outlook on the world these last few weeks. Our community has suffered a great loss, and the hurt and impact of losing Campbell has been felt far and wide. It’s in these times I am most grateful for this community we have built. 9 years of World Class • 1/5 | Verticals Flicked through my entire hard drive of photographs that I’ve taken over my 9 years at WCA this past week in reflection and in preparation for a new academy website. Some of these made the list because of the composition, some because of the line, and others because of the memory of that day. Ultimately all photographs I’m proud of taking and grateful to be able to look back on. Just a fraction of the so many epic memories on, off and around the river with students and colleagues represented in these photographs. Some terms I was more focused on video, others terms I less motivated to shoot at all, and ultimately so many beautiful photographs and memories were left out of this selection that are still sitting on a hard drive.
