The James Beard Journalism Award nominees were announced last week, and we’re thrilled to have some of our work recognized alongside our talented peers in the industry. Around this time last year, we published “My Mama Loved Mangoes. When She Died, I Learned to Love Them, Too,” a haunting and beautiful personal essay by @d_storytellah. Also nominated in that category was “The Marmalade Lesson,” a print-exclusive feature by @paulgrichardson in our Fall/Winter 2025 issue (get a copy at shop.saveur.com). Lately I’ve been showing up here more often, and I wanted to share the “why” behind it. With the house quieter and the nest officially empty, I’ve felt a pull to stay connected—especially to my kids. Posting here has become a new way to bridge that distance, to share little slices of life like we used to in person.

But there’s something more, too. I’ve always had a story I’ve wanted to tell, and I’m finally giving myself permission to figure out how to share it. Choosing to put myself out there like this is part of doing something radically different—something that challenges me, stretches me, and helps me grow. Learning a new medium at this stage of life isn’t always easy, but it’s worth it.

So thank you for bearing with me as I stumble, learn, and show up anyway. I’m grateful for your presence here—it means more than you know.
