Statement from SOBO Beach
Following last week’s BCP Cabinet meeting, we’ve been inundated with questions and concerns about the future of SOBO Beach. We want to clarify the facts, address some rumours and explain how you can help.
The situation:
◾ BCP has run a tender process for the future 20-year operation of the site, originally due to conclude by 31 July 2026.
◾ Delays mean the process is still not formally concluded and requires full council approval.
◾ SOBO Beach is not the preferred bidder. BCP’s report cited the preferred bidder’s “highest guaranteed and projected rental income, strong covenant strength, significant hospitality experience, established local presence”.
Our immediate concern is timing. Our lease expires 31 October 2026. The new tenant will have access from 1 December, but has no planning permission in place. When we applied, it took 15 months to secure planning permission.
If SOBO closes before planning is in place, the site could be left without a beachside venue for a prolonged period.
SOBO Beach is more than a seasonal venue. We have built a genuine year-round community:
◾ Swimmers use us throughout the year, alongside Veterans, SEND, Men’s Mental Health, Mum’s support groups and many others.
◾ We fundraise for causes including Sleep Out to Help Out, Southbourne Foodbank, Southbourne Surf Lifesaving Club and Dorset Mind.
◾ For many, SOBO provides connection, respite and a place to escape the pressures of everyday life.
Councillors have the opportunity to prevent this on 13 October.

We Out Here 2026 was absolutely glorious! So amazing to see so many old and new friends so many incredible artists, DJs and immersive experiences.
Can’t wait for next year!
Thanks to Gilles Peterson and the rest of the team who’ve created the most incredible festival I’ve ever been to and right on our doorstep.

What a weekend at Cocoloco at Highcliffe Castle, in association with South Coast Wine Festival!

Two sold-out events, on the most beautiful site overlooking the sea.

A huge thank you to SCWF team, the Castle, Project 30, Lamps & Amps, James Bridle, our brilliant DJs, singers and bands, and of course the whole Cocoloco team for making it happen. I’m incredibly grateful to you all.

And thank you to everyone who joined us. We genuinely love what we do, and it’s a privilege to create these events and see so many of you enjoying them.

We’ve pushed hard this year welcomed over 30000 guests, and that’s our final festival of 2026 done. Now it’s time for some family time with Ocean before big school starts. ❤️

Wow... what an incredible way to end an amazing weekend! 🙌☀️

SOBO Beach in Southbourne is absolutely off the scale. Seriously cool venue – everything about it just works. The location, the people, the atmosphere... a solid 10/10. 🌊🎶

A huge thank you to @dabigt, Sunday Sessions, Bongo Dave, @martynthehat and #SoboBeach for having me. It was an absolute pleasure.

And a massive shout out to everyone who came down to dance, smile and share the afternoon with me. Your support honestly means the world. ❤️
