San Francisco VA Hospital, the Outer Richmond, San Francisco CA, 7/6/23

Day 5 of seeing this awesome visitor, the Red-headed Woodpecker.

It’s normal range ends on the other side of the Rocky Mountains, so this bird is way off course.

I wish I knew how it got here.

I wish I could see the moment it went the wrong direction and headed our way, West.

Nobody knows how it got here or how long it’ll be here.

I was happy it was there today, and I’ll no doubt head up there tmw to see if it’s still around.

(Did I mention it’s right across the street from my house? People are flying to SF from all over to see this bird-and it’s right across from my house. Crazy).

It’s possible it stays here for a little while. Or a long while?

I’ve been putting this off a long time now because I found Nash at hands-down the most difficult & extraordinarily painful time in my life. It’s not easy to look back on but he deserves it.

I was newly separated and living on my own for the first time in a decade & I experienced a luckily fairly uneventful home intruder incident. I was used to having a dog around but had to leave my beloved pup with his dad when I moved. It made the incident all the more heartbreaking & I was upset by thought that if I had a dog around it would’ve never happened. I decided I’d be on the lookout for an adoptable dog but not rush it. A BIG DOG. A SCARY LOOKING DOG.

Just a couple of days later I was leaving work in Silver Lake and found a stray flyer stuck to the bottom of my boot. STUCK TO THE BOTTOM OF MY BOOT!! It had a photo of a pit/german shepherd looking dog on it and I thought - he looks kinda scary! I kept the flyer in my car for some days and I finally got in touch with his foster Neima. I learned that Nash had been red alerted at @northcentralshelter for poor kennel presence and that the foster was actually a volunteer there - he had taken Nash (then called Siegfried 😝) home because he saw something in Nash that shelter visitors weren’t able to see.

Upon meeting him I was honestly wildly hesitant. He looked scared & unsure & like he had a slew of issues that I wasn’t prepared for at the time. I left that day feeling sad for him but pretty sure he couldn’t be the dog for me. A couple of weeks later, Neima reached back out and asked if I would be willing to foster and promised his assistance in the search for a permanent home.

I reluctantly agreed and picked him up. [continued in comments]

Brown-headed Cowbird (female), Simple Pleasures Cafe Parklet, the Outer Richmond, San Francisco CA, 4/29/23

Happy and somewhat surprised to see both a male and a female Brown-headed Cowbird at @simplepleasurescafe yesterday morning.

I’ve seen them there plenty before, but today was the first time I saw them there THIS season.

They’ve recently migrated here.

Had some friends in the Parklet when the Cowbirds arrived (@drunkdom, @steamerslane and @dadsnewtattoo).

So I was happy to share a little info about the species with my homies…

IN FACT-when I first found birding a few years ago, an early kernel of knowledge that blew my mind was THIS: Brown-headed Cowbird is a BROOD PARASITE.

What does that mean? It means they leave their eggs in another species’ nest and leave them to be unwittingly raised by a “surrogate” as their own.

This can often threaten the health of their own chicks as competition for food in the nest can be a thing. Common for their own babies to struggle for survival as a result.

Cowbirds have utilized this survival approach with over 200 different species of host birds.

Wild.

Totally wild.

This stuff blows my mind…
